There is some kind of bug with the in-game mailbox causing the wrong mail to be deleted. It happened to me once a long time ago. Then it happened again yesterday.
The first time I was sending multiple mails with 5 Man-at-Arms attached to my other characters. I logged to one of the other characters to pick them up. It took me about less them ten seconds to run to the mailbox. I grabbed one of the packages and deleted the mail. That is the exact same time as I got a promotional mail that gave me a title and a message from Lord Neverember. It was from a promo code I had entered the day before. That message moved all the different mails one slot down. Moving one of the messages that had Man-at-Arms attached to them into the slot for the mail that I had claimed and was about to delete. This happened at the same time as I clicked the confirm to delete button. I could see myself deleting the mail with 5 Man-at-Arms attached, but I was unable to stop it.
Yesterday I posted several auctions in AH at the same time. Same story. I got a hit on one of the auctions. Went to claim my AD. Deleted the empty mail. At the same time as I was going to click the confirm to delete button, one of my other auctions had sold, and I got a mail attached some AD. The new mail slipped into the slot for the mail I was going to delete. Once again I could see myself deleting the mail with AD attached to it, but I had already started clicking and didn't have time to react to it. Only lost 4k AD, but it could have been a potential fortune.

I have lost tens of thousands of AD over the past months due to this bug, but that is "small potatoes" and not really worth having to manage the hassle of dealing with undertrained F2P support staff.
But this happened again to me yesterday, this time with the bugged mailbox deleting a newer mail entry containing 5 epic professions assets. OUCH!!!
Of course I immediately reported this to support, and of course after a day I received a response stating (paraphrasing) they do restore items lost due to mailbox bugs. SERIOUSLY ?!?!?
edit: I have been told by a guildie, that he NEVER deletes empty mail entries anymore. He just lets them build up. I suppose THAT is one workaround.

Leave one looted message as a buffer.
Delete messages only below the buffer.
Never delete a new message again.
As you build up looted messages, a newer one can be the buffer and you can delete below that.
I'm not exactly sure why anyone who has had this happen to them once or twice (which I have) wouldn't take steps to prevent it from happening to them over and over again. I know it would be better if it were actually fixed, but if you can take steps to look out for yourself, why wouldn't you?
I never delete AH mail. They delete themselves after a week if empty.
Incorrect. I still have mail messages (no cargo) from January in my mailbox.
edit: Okay, so after more than 5 days, I have noticed empty mails from the Auction House have started to disappear on their own. My mail from Crypic Studios from Jan and mail from guildies from Feb and Mar are still there. So maybe, only mail from the AH will delete themselves after a week (ASSUMPTION: if empty), but I am still watching that for confirmation.

Not good enough. I have noticed, occasionally, that i get 4-5 new messages simultaneously. If this happens after/when you delete an old empty message, you don't delete the message immediately above your highlighted messages, but several messages above your highlighted message.
I have started, either leaving 5-6 dead message as buffers, or not deleting messages at all.

If you are deleting the message at the top of your mailbox and new mail arrives, you delete the message that becomes the one at the top of your mailbox. It's not because it jumps X number of spaces, but because it deletes the message in the top position.
If you never delete the message that is right at the top of your mailbox at the time you are deleting messages, you will not accidentally delete incoming mail. I don't know why there is no jump for incoming mail if you leave just one message as a buffer, but it does work.

It jumps up by the number of simultaneous incoming mails, so it CAN jump up more than one. So be careful deleting empty mail buried in the middle of your mailbox, espcailly if you are a power user and get lots of incoming mail.
My most recent message bug-deletion happened in the middle of my mailbox.

Ouch in deed! That is a loss worth mentioning.
Happened to me again too. This time it was something that sold in AH: Don't know excatly what it was cause I have plenty of auctions going right now. Don't think it was any of my more valuable pieces, luckily.
I'll catch up on that advice to never delete mail.

Wouldn't be nice if the implemented something as simple as a checkbox and you can multi-select the messages YOU WANT to apply the action. I lost big time AD before and CSR claims it is not a bug when so many players have posted it here over and over. It's so simple to fix too yet it never gets fixed.
Even after having escalated my ticket for resolution, their management still refuses to acknowledge this bug, which I have now discovered to have existed for over a year, and their management still refuses to reimburse even Zen purchased items that have disappearred due to bugs in their game. I amazes me that this game still has customers. As for me, I am done with them.
edit: They closed my ticket, without even a final response, or any resolustion other than the implied "go away".
edit: They got tired of me reopening the ticket, and requesting a further escalation to an even higher level of customer support, so they just deleted my ticket entirely. It seems there IS no level of customer support that actually supplies support.

The thing is, that bug should have been fixed a year ago but it went down in the ''not important bug abyss''
