It seems like the warning telling you that you can't dye weapons comes up inconsistently, so you may see some success the next time you log in. I suggest you keep trying, anyway.

To dye a weapon try the following:

    1) Right click to open the "Change Appearance" dialogue window on a piece of armor in the Character Sheet window (and do not close the Character Sheet window afterwards).
    2) Drop a dye or dye remover in the appropriate slot of the Change Item Appearance window.
    3) Without closing either of the two dialogue windows, right click and choose "Change Appearance" on the weapon in the Character Sheet one.

This should leave you with the weapon and dye where they need to be in the Change Item Appearance window and allow you color things as normal. As even the newest weapons seem to have functionally changeable color channels (the Midsummer Festival stuff looks stunning with some colors) it really seems the "Weapons can't be dyed" message is the bug and not the other way around...

The above is correct, exactly how I did it yesterday evening and numerous times before. Definitely works! :)

I find if you have one of the weapon enchantments that create a weapon glow, dyeing the weapon itself becomes semi-moot. The magic glow overpowers the dyejob. There may be exceptions, I dunno...I only tried it with a couple DC weapons.

Actually you don't even have to do any kind of weird workaround.

    It's quite simple:
    1. Double click the dye
    2. Drag weapon into slot.
    3. Apply

    Works fine.

The bug is that you can't do it other ways imo. Seems fully intended, they simply forgot to update the other mechanics to work with weapons.

no the workaround doesnt work anymore, unless there is a new one,

probably cause somebody was too lazy to fix the issues with vorpal enchant on colored weapons they disabled it

Nope, they stopped all weapon dying a while ago. :(
So my TR is running around with red, yellow, and blue shortswords and apparently will be doing so forever...
