So I was dawdling around on my mule for a moment and realized I have 114 Nightmare Lock boxes. I have yet to see a key drop in game, I once traded for one, to get jack squat of course, but now they just sit collecting digital dust.
Why not add a new type of currency into the game? They already have several different types everywhere else.
Zen keys - Which allow you to get the uncommon, rare and epic drops <- you can already get these!
PvE keys - Allow you to get an assortment of potions or maybe the regular 2 gold horse? Common items
PvP keys - Stuff for PvP, party poppers, cosmetic stuffs?
This would bring the lock boxes back into the economy as a currency as well, people would be trading lock boxes for various types of keys to obtain different types of rewards, some more rewarding than others. If people want the companions or mounts they still have to pay for those keys. Although someone will be buying those keys to trade for a large amount of PvE/PvP keys.

I have played a number of good free games that did just fine making money without selling your loot back to you. Bank space, bags, character slots, exotic races and classes, fancy outfits, whatever... there are other things to sell and players WILL buy them if the game is good.

*rolls eyes* was not an attempt at Trolling, was trying to figure out How he came to the conclusion you paid a dollar for every Mob you kill. Perhaps you are getting way more Boxes than I am, I have picked up about 20 of them and just reached lvl 51 yesterday.

Obviously the drop rate of the PvE keys would be very uncommon if not rare. Much more rare than the lockboxes themselves.
Another useless thread. We do NOT need more keys. It is bad enough with the lockboxes but they make money with it. Have some restraint if you don't want to buy keys:rolleyes: or sell your boxes on the AH.

Anyway, lockboxes are the oldest monetization trick in the book, and they're not likely to go. Better get used to it because enough players fall for it.
Or you can realize that the lockboxes are an additional drop beyond the regular mob loot (i.e, the box isn't the "mob's loot" trapped behind a key), and that they're optional.
edit: this is remarkably clear when you see how the boxes drop in Star Trek - regular mobs drop at most one item, in a capsule. When a box drops, it's alongside that capsule. No loot is being lost because of that box drop.
But that would involve internet gaming forums not being wall-to-wall complaints. :rolleyes:
re: the announcemnt - hit escape, go to Rearrange HUD (or whatever it's called), drag the notification box out of the center of the screen. reduces the annoyance factor greatly.
I don’t owe them anything and neither do you. In fact its their job to impress me into paying them, to offer something that I cant get anywhere else and thus I will pay for the privilege of owning that thing so unique and interesting.
The value of what I buy is exactly what I agree to pay for it. The notion that some company or another “has to make money” is ridiculous.
They have to earn money.
And what have they done to earn yours? Perceptual trickery, bait and switch currencies, labyrinths of out-of-game to in-game exchange rates over a variety of coins? How about the prisoner’s dilemma loot system, having fun with that? How about the school-yard bully chat ban system, is that admirable? Peer pressure announcements about people winning their imaginary ponies just like you can for the purchase of only a few (dozen) keys.
It is only of the slimmest consolation that one never seems to run out of suckers buying the boxes in the AH so at least they are worth some diamonds.
But has this game earned your money? Have they provided you with a 200$ product? A 60$ product? Or have they provided you with a free product and an excuse to flush money into their pockets.
If you are going to give money to a company for something, at least demand that you get something in return besides the opportunity to give them more money.

They've earned their money, in my book. I've paid 10 bucks for a 90-minute movie that sucked and wasn't the least bit entertaining. I've paid $60 for games with game-breaking bugs that prevented me from actually completing the game, and I've paid $60 for games that kept me occupied for 4 hours before I'd beaten it and grown tired of the experience. I've spent time in a casino and pissed money away, and I've paid to not have fun with various other experiences. I'm enjoying the game. I'm having fun playing the game. It's not perfect, but it doesn't have to be. The entertainment it provides alone is worth a few bucks, in my book.
