Players Concerned with Console versus PC

doctordnadoctordna Member Posts: 65 Arc User
I was on last weekend and some players brought this up in chat. They suggested the move into another console will present a decline in players for PC. Others in the chat said their concern was the lag that came from hosting XB One on the server last year. Don't XB One, PS4 and PC have separate servers? Cryptic doesn't offer character or account transfer to another platform. I am undecided as to any position, but since players were smiting each other in chat about PS4 service.

I have owned a PS3 for many years and plan to get a PS4. Will I play Neverwinter on the PS4? I am still uncertain, but I will abandon the PC version if and when I do. I can't see many people playing on multiple platforms. I certainly understand the company wanting more sales from people who don't own a PC. But I was sensing a lot of stress from players who own PC and not a console.

I personally won't move away from PC. One big thing is PS4 and XBox do not have gateway access.

Regarding the lag, even if they use separate server, it can cause lag if they don't expand the pipe to allow more traffic capacity. I suspect the current lag issue is either caused by summer festival and/or the pre-release PS4. I hope it is caused by former.

I play on both Xbox and PC. I didn't stop playing on PC when I started playing on Xbox.
My opinions are my own. I do not work for PWE or Cryptic. - Forum Rules - Protector's Enclave Discord - I play on Xbox

I started playing this game with xbox, but moved to pc in couple of weeks. Overall this game is far superior (for me) in pc, what i miss about console is controller, since it offers very relaxed way of playing this game.
I wouldn't stress about different platforms, there are plenty of people for every one of them.

    No.

It wouldnt even be the top 5 reasons why player population declined.

Some players will move from PC to PS/4. I have already lost one guild member and I know of more in my alliance that are shifting. People that play PC + (a console) will still spend less time on the PC. Most people don't have more time to game just because another platform was released.

It is likely healthy for Neverwinter's finances if they support more platforms. That makes it more likely for the game to remain supported longer, and hopefully have a higher level of support.

If things go well, we'll see the developers better able to deliver high quality content and an increase in the overall player base. If things don't go well, we'll see the same player base divided across more platforms. Short-term you will certainly see a decrease in the player base. If the move nets more revenue for the developer, they will hopefully reinvest some of that in improving the game (more developers) and in better / more extensive marketing to bring new players to the game, across all platforms.

The purpose of launching on consoles isn't to split the population, even though some players will shift if their preferred platform becomes available (gaming from your couch can be tough to argue against).

Consoles bring in many players who aren't interested in touching a PC game. This is the majority of the market they want to tap.

Many PC players aren't going anywhere simply because they have no interest in starting over. Purchases do not transfer. Progress doesn't transfer. Why would we want to do that to ourselves?

gave it a try myself on PS4, recreated my CW down to the finest detail, then was unleashed into the game using the controller.

the only reason I'd go console is to get more FPS, but considering I don't own either a Xbox or a PS4 it's probably cheaper to get myself a better pc first lol

PC is a considerably better platform to develop and debug the game on, since you can have high patch frequency etc.

So even if consoles might drain some players from the PC game, there is no reason to worry about the future of the PC game.

Rather be happy that NW moved on to consoles, it gives a much sounder economic foundation for investing money into NW development so we can expect more content being made.

I don't know about the prices on a PS4 down in your country my friend, but here in Canada a real quality computer runs twice as much as a brand new PS4 with the CoD bundle. Back in my college days I did a lot of gaming on consoles and PC was for work related. :D But that is the whole idea behind consoles anyway.

Consoles are designed just to play games, not to be all-in-one game, work, and entertainment engines. My only reason for not buying a PS4 yet is my PS3. I still get home from work and blow off steam with my games on there. I love the PS consoles, (still have my PS2 in the closet) but in my opinion they came out with the next generation way too fast. :dizzy:

btw I am not knocking XBox, at one point I owned the original. But never went beyond that, the 360's issue of overheating was a serious turn off to me. So I just never continued in the franchise.

Thanks for the input friends, at least you are not getting over dramatic as they did in chat last weekend. One player (no names of course) was spouting doom and destruction (I believe was the troll who started it all) kept saying there was only one instance available for the dragon in Whispering Caverns. I really don't care if the NW PC server ends up with the same population as Champions. I still play Champions once in a while and I still have fun. Enjoy the game.

Not valid pro-console argument. You can always buy wireless keyboard/mouse. :P :):D

But...but...but that would mean spending Real Money and this game is f2p. How can you even think of suggesting such a thing ? :) :* o:) >:)

Oh for sure, I know some people who have a really comfortable PC-gaming La-Z-Boy setup.

Even a steady influx of fresh PC players wouldn't likely address this for long, and I don't know that it can really be viewed as a terrible problem, because circumstances where you "have to" kill that particular dragon are few and far between. Level-70 players don't go back and farm the ToD dragons because it's not worth their time anymore. Level 60+ players need to get on with other content as well. Too many things to do have been added to the game for certain older content to remain populated at all times. And a place like Whispering Caverns is too far in for "tourist" type players to get to, if they play the game for a bit and then stop.

It's also an issue for things like old skirmishes, if there's not really the levelling population to pop a queue in a timely fashion. But you can't blame it on consoles, so much as on a game that primarily encourages players to spend their time in the latest additions and treat everything else as a waste of time.

3 year old content is a waste of time.. other mmos just rework old content into solo instances eventually (like every new addition = old stuff either reworked, or put into solo play (or option, solo or group play options)

This works the best.. old stuff can be done on alts, but decently forgotten for everyone else, who probably already ran it hundreds of times.

This is the first mmo, where they literally either basically take old stuff all the time and/or rehash it all the time. Its actaully becoming a annoyance.
