I was on last weekend and some players brought this up in chat. They suggested the move into another console will present a decline in players for PC. Others in the chat said their concern was the lag that came from hosting XB One on the server last year. Don't XB One, PS4 and PC have separate servers? Cryptic doesn't offer character or account transfer to another platform. I am undecided as to any position, but since players were smiting each other in chat about PS4 service.
I have owned a PS3 for many years and plan to get a PS4. Will I play Neverwinter on the PS4? I am still uncertain, but I will abandon the PC version if and when I do. I can't see many people playing on multiple platforms. I certainly understand the company wanting more sales from people who don't own a PC. But I was sensing a lot of stress from players who own PC and not a console.

Regarding the lag, even if they use separate server, it can cause lag if they don't expand the pipe to allow more traffic capacity. I suspect the current lag issue is either caused by summer festival and/or the pre-release PS4. I hope it is caused by former.

I wouldn't stress about different platforms, there are plenty of people for every one of them.
It wouldnt even be the top 5 reasons why player population declined.
It is likely healthy for Neverwinter's finances if they support more platforms. That makes it more likely for the game to remain supported longer, and hopefully have a higher level of support.
If things go well, we'll see the developers better able to deliver high quality content and an increase in the overall player base. If things don't go well, we'll see the same player base divided across more platforms. Short-term you will certainly see a decrease in the player base. If the move nets more revenue for the developer, they will hopefully reinvest some of that in improving the game (more developers) and in better / more extensive marketing to bring new players to the game, across all platforms.

Consoles bring in many players who aren't interested in touching a PC game. This is the majority of the market they want to tap.
Many PC players aren't going anywhere simply because they have no interest in starting over. Purchases do not transfer. Progress doesn't transfer. Why would we want to do that to ourselves?

So even if consoles might drain some players from the PC game, there is no reason to worry about the future of the PC game.
Rather be happy that NW moved on to consoles, it gives a much sounder economic foundation for investing money into NW development so we can expect more content being made.
Consoles are designed just to play games, not to be all-in-one game, work, and entertainment engines. My only reason for not buying a PS4 yet is my PS3. I still get home from work and blow off steam with my games on there. I love the PS consoles, (still have my PS2 in the closet) but in my opinion they came out with the next generation way too fast.
btw I am not knocking XBox, at one point I owned the original. But never went beyond that, the 360's issue of overheating was a serious turn off to me. So I just never continued in the franchise.
Thanks for the input friends, at least you are not getting over dramatic as they did in chat last weekend. One player (no names of course) was spouting doom and destruction (I believe was the troll who started it all) kept saying there was only one instance available for the dragon in Whispering Caverns. I really don't care if the NW PC server ends up with the same population as Champions. I still play Champions once in a while and I still have fun. Enjoy the game.
It's also an issue for things like old skirmishes, if there's not really the levelling population to pop a queue in a timely fashion. But you can't blame it on consoles, so much as on a game that primarily encourages players to spend their time in the latest additions and treat everything else as a waste of time.

This works the best.. old stuff can be done on alts, but decently forgotten for everyone else, who probably already ran it hundreds of times.
This is the first mmo, where they literally either basically take old stuff all the time and/or rehash it all the time. Its actaully becoming a annoyance.
