Why all the toxicity in PvP?

silence1xsilence1x Member Posts: 1,503 Arc User
"F#$% you. GG"

"We Win"

"Stay at fire"

Why is the PvP community in this game so toxic to each other? As hard as it is to get a match these days, you'd think that talking a bunch of smack would lead most to stop playing PvP. I mean, is PvP full of little kids that just learned how to type the F word or is it full of epeen insecure people that need to verbally abuse others to make themselves feel better?

This is a game after all. I'd be willing to bet money that most of the trash talkers wouldn't dare say the same things IRL to someone. A little trash talk is fine but when you start talking about someone's family, I think that's crossing a line.

For those of you that don't do this, kudos to you, your maturity and your realization that PvP should be fun. For those that do, you really need to go outside once in a while, get some sun on that pasty skin and realize how small you are in the grand scheme of things. No one outside of yourself cares what your iLvL is or where you stand on the (resetting) Leaderboard.

We need to foster a sense of fair play and fun in PvP or it will slowly die (even more) in this game. Where will you go when you've run off everyone else from PvP? Did Alliances just turn PvP into a huge "mine is bigger" fight between the power guilds? I sincerely hope not; I like to PvP once in a while but usually stay away due to the attitudes inherent in some people that play it.

The "toxicity" exists from the moment that PvP is not fun at all for a lot of players/classes thanks to mechanics like "Ambush ring", "perma" root HR, One shot TRs, One rotation GFs, GTFs, etc, etc, etc.

Agreed but, at least in my experience, the player types that you listed above are the ones being the most toxic. If you're BiS, why talk smack?

    Ego

They need it to feel better about themselves.
I'm not looking for forgiveness, and I'm way past asking permission. Earth just lost her best defender, so we're here to fight. And if you want to stand in our way, we'll fight you too.

I find the issue stems from the persons mother not buying them Fruity Pebbles. Then the same mom made them go out in the sunlight.

Never ends well for the PvP folks after a day like that.

There is a general lack of manners, decorum and sportsmanship in the world these days. Vitriol, disrespect and rudeness are the meta for public discourse, all under the guise of "speaking my mind".

It may be because I am a dinosaur, but I learned sportsmanship in my youth. I learned how to be a good loser, and even more importantly, a gracious winner.

And dollars to donuts, I would wager any of the foul-mouthed hateful punks who have helped create such a toxic environment would have no problem spewing their HAMSTER to anyone's face. Why? Because they don't care. They have not been taught about repercussions: "Yes, you can say whatever you want, but if you get punched in the throat, it's your own damn fault."

During the Portabello stuff, I was casually running through Traps.. not in a hurry, unlike some others in the PuG, and at the end one of them just started laying in to me about being a "noob" and "no HAMSTER clue" and "L2P, lulz", because he scored higher than I did on Paingiver.. and his ilvl was half of mine.

I thanked the party for the run and returned to my Stronghold. And ignored the HAMSTER. Why? Because (at times) I can be a rational, mature adult. Besides, what would benefit from me making "excuses" ("you may have gotten points, but I got all the stuff you skipped, and am now feeding my coffer, and oh yeah, Dragonhoard was REALLY good to me this run.. how much RP did you get?"), or calling him out on his tiny little HAMSTER?

    Nothing.

Yet, I gave my traditional: "Great run, thank you!"

    It's called sportsmanship.

During eDemo last night, I could out-DPS by a SW (actually, I got out-DPS by pretty much everyone.) My response? "Great run, thank you!" Not "CHEATER!" or "You're exploiting XYZ!" or "HAMSTER off and die, jerkfaced!" I was honestly impressed. I'd heard that SWs can put out massive damage if the player knows the mechanics. In fact, I'm going to respec my SW to follow that path a little more closely.

It's okay to not be the biggest or the best... because no matter if you are or not, someone out there will always be bigger and better. That is the very nature of life.

Although, I am nervous for the future because these people haven't already been taught that lesson, or figured it out yet. Because one day, they will talk smack to someone's face and they will end up in the hospital.

"Man, he sucker-punched me..." "I could have whupped his HAMSTER if my friends hadn't been holding me back.." "He cheated!" "My HAMSTER is tiny and little!"

If you get angry when gaming, maybe it's time to quit playing and do something else.
I do only solo que, so i face premades very often -> and get wrecked. So i have bad K/D ratio, so what. It's just a game, no need to rage in chat about it or go personal to any specific player.

All valid points @instynctive and I, like you, was raised to treat others fairly. I remember reading one of the Dragonlance novels and a line in it really stuck with me ever since:

"As gracious in victory as he was in defeat" or something to that effect. I think the Internet has caused the "I can say anything to anyone" attitude to flourish. That, and the "everyone gets a trophy" movement. Sorry folks, in real life there ARE losers. It's not about winning/losing but more about how you handle victory/defeat.

I just wish PvP was more about sportsmanship than the Leaderboard. :(

Yes I do. Glad you caught that. If what I'm saying doesn't apply to the reader, no harm no foul right?

I have a rule since mod 1 I dont start sending angry tells during the match but will end it sending them after the match
anybody sending me bad tell in the old mods/days i would respond by focusing them and getting even more tells : D
Its very hard to play a match properly if you are sending nasty tells

Fair play...I don't know if this can be instilled directly into players but it is possible to deter ugly behaviour if each one of us points it out when it happens - for instance: in a PuG group, player on my team insults player on opposing team (F-you etc). No one said anything until I told him off in the zone (so all could see). I think he was stunned that a member of his own team would tell him off. He just shut up after that.

Basically, even bad attitudes can change if displaying bad behaviour is punished in one way or another (without resorting to bad attitudes as a way of punishment).

All good points folks. I also think that twinking your toon for 60-69 level PvP probably causes some of the attitude. I guess, much like personal behavior IRL, we can't "make" them do a certain thing in a certain way.

At least I now know that I'm not the only one that feels this way. Onward and upward!

My point is trying to bring to the forefront that one of the reasons that PvP is declining in this game is, after balancing issues, is the fact that people in PvP can be toxic. We can't change the Balance issues but we CAN change our attitudes. This may lead to more PvP matches.

Which part isn't true - toxic players or toxic PvP'ers?

From the moment that a player can feel "higher" than others by using "broken mechanics" (ambush, drains, owlbear comp, bondings, etc), the toxicity will be born.

The PvP community has essentially been pretty toxic since day one. Neverwinter has always had the "win at all costs" mentality in PvP. From cheating, exploiting, using obviously broken and unfair mechanics, to belittling players, only allowing the very best of the best to join a guild or team, requiring BiS to play and always unfairly stacking your group so you can stomp pug players...it's always been there.

Not once has this game had anything that would remotely resemble a healthy PvP environment. And for that, the PvP community has paid the price. Fewer and fewer people started participating in PvP, thus there wasn't a demand for any sort of new PvP content...without new PvP content, fewer people still enaged PvP and the cycle continues.

In my opinion, the only way to fix PvP is to rebuild it completely from the ground up. If that meant the current crop of hardcore PvPers would get mad and quit, I would view that as a positive. But as it stands right now, PvP in Neverwinter is pretty much at a dead end.

i just got one shot by a TR critical hit 170k damage from shocking execution, and im a 4.2k IL gwf with rosegold rings and pvp gear.
Thats how broken TR is that they ignore defense armour class and tenacity.
PVP will never be fun untill matches are even ,that means one class on their own cannot one shot any other class, until that happens pvp will always bring out a lot of anger and hate cuase right now i just RQ the match and wont be playing again for a few days cause im sooo mad that after working so hard to build up my gwf for 3 years and still cant compete in pvp cause of a TR with broken feats.
PVP in neverwinter is dead ,the only ones having "fun" are the players using the broken feats and class and theyre the ones that complain the most when a class nurf is proposed, the majority dont complain they just stop playing pvp ....or stop playing neverwinter alltogether.
Its not rocket science people ,just make it so no one hit can take more than 25% of a players HP,that means no more feats that ignore everything ,you cant have that sort of thing in pvp and expect it not to be missused and abused.
And that missuse is what annoys players and leads them to hate the game.

And none of them were toxic as the OP described. Besides that smack talkin that we had few times between ourself , thats because we know each other more or less, since the PvP community is small.
so just because you PvP once , doesn't mean you are apart of the PvP community lets not mix out casual play with a PvP community, same goes for PvE community.

metalldjt - you are correct. My apologies. I am NOT a part of the regular player so maybe that has colored my opinion a bit. Please don't assume however that your experience however is typical of all people that PvP (casual or not).

I did generalize in my opening statement so, again, my apologies. Let me be more specific to MY experiences in PvP. If you are not in one of the big name PvP guilds and/or have your player name seen in match after match, then you have a much better chance of being flamed while in-game. If you don't have ALL BiS PvP gear, you'll be flamed in-game. If you hit a bad bit of lag while playing PvP, you'll be flamed in-game.

PvP is supposed to be challenging and engaging. Because a small minority of NW players have put in hours upon hours to get their characters BiS, PvP can be both. However, my comments are directed at the players who think that their skills in PvP give them the right to talk smack to players they don't know or run with on a regular basis. It's as rude as LFG asking for HDPS or 3.5K+, for example. We're all here to have fun. Why should some PvP players try to ruin someone else's fun.

In my opinion, PvP would have more players, in all skill levels, if the bad apples would either remain quiet OR realize that no one started day one with BiS gear and help the less skilled players. Why some PvP'ers think that they have found the secrets to PvP and must never share them is beyond me. We all learn, we all get better. If someone's THAT good at PvP, wouldn't it be boring to keep playing this game?

But, I digress. You, and I'm sure most players that are regular PvP players, are not part of the problem. My opening post was not meant for you. It was meant for those that play the FotM and act as if they are Gods in the game and all others are HAMSTER. I guess it's a generational thing as well - respect for others seems to be a vanishing commodity these days.

The problem here is that "FotM" classes are not limited just to Pv, but they also impact on PvE too... and no one can say a thing about some classes' over performance because bad players using those classes in a bad way will defend them even with false and biased data with the approval of the moderation staff...

To be fair, your first paragraph also applies to PvE as well. Those of us around from the beginning remember why channels like "legit" were set up. Just the fact that you had to have the players create something like that shows how widespread it became. Just because everything became so easy you don't see this as much in pve anymore but rest assured it was there and alive for most of this game. '

As far as content, I wouldn't focus on PvP s the PvE content in this game is so mind numbing repeatable it has driven away far more players. At least you can still have a thrilling pvp match fairly often. When was the last time someone running demo for the billionth time trying to get a orange shiny said "what a thrilling dungeon"...
