Lans Thuliaga spoilers

two30two30 Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 1,168 Arc User
Avoid this thread if you don't want spoilers. There's an achievement that crosses multiple chapters of the Maze Engine campaign.

Spoiler:

It's called Friendly Goliath.
  1. Lans Thuliaga - Warrior: Search the tattered clothing in Chapter 1.
  2. Lans Thuliaga - Lords' Alliance: Talk to Lucas Shaneway III at the end of Chapter 2.
  3. Lans Thuliaga - Hero: Talk to Lans Thuliaga himself in Chapter 3.
  4. Lans Thuliaga - Survivor: Talk to Sergeant Knox in Protector's Enclave or Dread Ring.
  5. Lans Thuliaga - Unlucky: Talk to Makos in Dread Ring or at the start of Chapter 4.
  6. Lans Thuliaga - Slave: Examine the (invisible) Rusted Greatsword on the high bridge in the Crucible area of the Whispering Caverns.
  7. Lans Thuliaga - Baphomet's Pawn: Examine the Dropped Dagger during Chapter 9.
  8. Talk to Lans Thuliaga during Chapter 11.

Has anyone found the 6th step?

I've finished Chapter 10 of the campaign and haven't encountered any groups of Mind Flayers in any of the chapters or dailies. I've revisited Whispering Caverns, slaughtered all the Mind Flayers, climbed the weird cubes, and stood in the green slime.

So I have apparently already messed this up, as I did not find the thing I needed to look at in chapter one, despite thinking I had looked around very thoroughly. Maybe I was too tired by then.

Once you finish an Act, you can choose to replay chapters. Act I is chapters 1 through 3. So finish chapter 3, then you can go back and search chapter 1 again.

I hoped it would be replayable like that. Thanks!

After Makos is there sort of "bridge" to get the lore quest to do the next part ?
I can lend my "sword" if you can help me out.
I am "slave" -ing away my free time to find out where to go .

    Please help :)

I got your hints and found the sword on the bridge on the way to the iron heart, but then the story says to come in contact with more of Lans' armour. The "slave" hint does not ring a bell, can you give another hint perhaps?

I have now finished the achievement, but I'm really bleeping angry. I spent hours combing the Whispering Caverns looking for step 6, to eventually discover that the interact is invisible. There's no "Rusted Greatsword". There's no twinkle to indicate some thing to examine. You have to point your damn reticule at an empty patch. Maybe this graphical issue doesn't happen on your computer, but it does on mine. Here's a pic of the damn spot.
    Spoiler:

The rest of the achievement is straightforward, and I've updated the OP.

    @two30 and @commanderander

I have the same graphical error. No sparkle at all and no item to see. Only while scouring on foot was I able to see the reticle change to be able to interact with it.

confirmed, the list is working nicely

you have to work your way up, so you need to solve 1 before 2 becomes available and so forth

I hate to bring you back to this pain, but I think I probably have the same issue as you had. Anyway, I have missed the "Rusted Greatsword", and could swear I looked everywhere in each chapter.

Anyway - you were so good about finding everything and listing what chapter it is in. Except for this one, which I've somehow missed. Is it a chapter that is replayable, or have I lost out because it's a daily? I'm in the process of finishing Chapter 12 now, and even though I talked to Lans in Chapter 11, ofc I didn't get the final achievement. :frowning:

If not too painful, could you tell me where it is in the storyline? Chapter #, or one of the dailies while waiting for out the interim? I'm bummed now.

It's not chapter-connected. It's in the open world. You should be able to interact with the spot shown in the screenshots as long as you've done the previous step.

So... just my 2-cents. I LOVE that it's invisible. LOVE it. Way back in the original alpha, there were a few of those hidden things like that, with achievements even. I'd noted down several of them for when the game actually went live. I recall when closed beta started, I went looking for them and was disappointed to find all the hidden stuff like that gone. This game needs to hold our hands less... sure, main quest stuff, fine... but PLEASE DO put in more tricky hidden stuff that people have to actually work for, and spend hours unraveling. Ignore those that have to use velcro because they never learned to tie their shoes.

An good example? I was proud of my Master Scryer title (the title should have been: "Has Lots of Free Time") because I didn't use Google or even let people tell me where the stones were. I hunted them down myself. Why? Because it's one of the only things in this game that is freeform and I LOVE freeform stuff like that because they're so rare in MMOs.

Another good example? The hidden boss in SP. I really hope that's not gone when you guys get around to re-releasing SP caverns. I still remember the thrill of getting there the first time, even if it was easy. I also loved the experience of taking people there who'd never seen it before.

PLEASE add more stuff like this. It's awesome. It makes the game interesting and makes us feel like the developers are really putting thought into the game's design and experience, rather than simply regurgitating the same mobs and maps with slight variations over and over.

Now, I'm going to try and forget the spoilers and go back and try and get this achievement since I didn't even know it existed until I stumbled on this thread :)

I'm OK with it in the current form, where you can replay quests to get the lore or achievements. I don't think it will spoil your search to say there is a whole other achievement that has this one as part of it. If you're interested to see, check your achievement list and use the checkbox to see the ones you haven't done.

@commanderander I want to thank you and whoever is responsible for 1. being able to replay quests for achievements or lore 2. Actually listing the achievements you've missed, in a greyed-out form, after you've played the quest the first time. This was implemented a couple mods ago, and as a lore/achievement hunter, I am really happy to have the hints and ability to replay.

I wish we could have the opportunity to go back through early ones, as I out-leveled a couple early on, and being the completest type A that I am, they task me.

You missed my point - I know how achievements and the journal work, and I think it's fine to replay - in fact, I think every quest in the game should be replayable, unlike how it is now. My point here is that I like the *secret* achievements that aren't obvious as you go along or that you get just from playing content.

I like how the things don't have sparkles and how getting these types of achievements don't hold your hand. They did it a bit in the previous Chapter style stuff as well, though most of them were pretty obvious once you looked at it. The meta-achievements like this, especially when there's no hand-holding to find the objectives, add flavor to a game that's otherwise pretty easy. (don't mean mobs die too easily, I mean that in a more abstract sense - Neverwinter just isn't a game that requires players to THINK very much, which is pretty sad given it's a D&D game).

STO does this pretty well, particularly because they don't tell you the ones that are available that you don't already have. That way, you don't know what you don't know. I'd personally prefer if they did the same in NW and hid incomplete achievements and so players are forced to find them on their own - perhaps the ones that require steps, once you've started, those show so you can see progress. But otherwise, they're hidden.

Yes, I got that point - I think you might have missed mine. I'm "OK" with things being *secret*, to a point. I love to hunt down and discover them on my own. My point was I'm OK with it, as long as I can replay the quest if I find out I missed something.

I think we both feel the same. I also like the way STO does it, and I tend to drive my friends crazy since I won't play through something new with a group without first going through it and finding the "good stuff". But there are achievements and lore in NW that may be obvious now, but were pretty secret/hidden to me as a new player. I will never be able to get ones I missed, because I can't go back and replay any of the early quests.

That's all I meant - it's fine to be secret, but an invisible sword that is not linked to a mission and halts progress for the progression of the meta-achievement, I wouldn't want that being so secret that I got no chance to return and figure it out. I'm happy the journal is showing me what I missed. I like the way STO lets me replay any mission, and also get achievements for playing group content with other classes (getting the engineering and tactical achievements when I'm playing science, for instance)

So yeah - I knew you know how the journal works. lol Happy hunting!
  • kvetkvet Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 2,700 Arc User
Ahh - seems we're actually in agreement, just staying things in a different way :) I guess seeing the possibilities or not in the journal is a fine point that probably doesn't matter anyway when weighed against the larger point of wanting more "soft" but yet complicated (meaning, requiring actual effort that doesn't involve forced grinding of the same content 100 times) achievements in general, like the one this topic is about.

For some reason, I am following the guides about Lans through the story and did find his sword in Whispering Caverns but there's no interaction with it, no sparkles or anything. Should I repeat the quests again to get them to explain about Lans?

The previous ones have to be found before you can interact with the sword. So double-check your journal and see which ones you haven't completed, then re-run those quests.

Every lore entry requires that you have unlocked the one before it, so if you miss one, you'll miss all the ones following it. If you missed something early on, you may have to replay a lot of chapters.

It hasn't been fixed. Some players can see it, others can't.

However, I finally got around to testing which graphical settings affect its visibility. The answer is "Show high detail objects". Why is Lans' old rusty greatsword a "high detail object"?
