What I find odd is that it seems no matter where you are located geographically all data being routed to the PWE/Cryptic server is being sent to Denver before riding the cogent backbone to Boston. So even though I'm within artillery range of Boston my connection is actually worse than people closer to Denver.

Anyone have any idea why the data is being routed this way?

Well this is no good because there are still major issues.

That 21st hop has been timing out for days now. It may be nothing at all and then again it may be the cause of these terrible connection issues, I don't know.

Could this be some Comcast/Cogent dispute? I know Verizon and Cogent used to have a dispute. I left Verizon for Comcast and I'm really hoping the dispute didn't follow me. A lot of the people reporting problems have Comcast.

And like others have mentioned, STO is literally the only game or service I'm having trouble with. I assume if I tried NWN it would be the same issue. Everything else I've done online has been smooth as silk, like normal. Netflix, youtube, amazon, other games etc. are all fine. STO though once again is having problems. It's not like this is a unique or rare occurrence. I've been dealing with it off and on for years.

(Why is my signature here on the NWN forums different from my signature on the STO forums? These forums make no sense)

EDIT: Ok it's probably not a Comcast-Cogent dispute, according to this:

    http://katyonthehill.com/cogent-names-names-in-interconnection-tussles/

[quote]Cogent recently signed interconnection agreements with AT&T, Verizon and Comcast, the three ISPs that accounted for the biggest part of its congested traffic in the run up to the open Internet rules that went into effect June 12.

Since then, Cogent said that Comcast has been opening up new interconnection points.

“What we saw was a rapid rate of port augmentation by Comcast throughout the second quarter and it was only at the end of the quarter that we saw ports running at full capacity,” Schaeffer said. “Now we met with Comcast, we provided our forecasts and there are additional ports being turned up in this quarter. At this point, there are sufficient ports that there is no congestion,” said Schaeffer.[/quote]

(I like how my quote tags don't work here)

This is definitely something on Cryptic's end somewhere.

You'll notice in the posted tracert's that comcast is pretty much routing all their traffic through Denver. These routing choices are internal to Comcast, but basically, they have "backbone" server locations that are routing traffic based on current network congestion or lack thereof. Denver is obviously a main hub for Comcast.

I am located in NJ and my traffic goes through Denver also.
  • kitkathdkitkathd Member Posts: 286 Arc User
Actually thats not on comcast thats on Cogent. If I traceroute very notable Boston sites I route right to them. Only when I try to access Neverwinter and their Cogent Provider do I get routed away from boston first.

Oddly Gateway works (now, wasn't earlier, and now it's peppy). Game loads up, click Play Now and then the gameclient.exe ghosts.

I'm heading off to bed if this isn't resolved when I wake up then I seriously am thinking about not reupping my VIP status. Between the devs going home for the weekend with a giant HAMSTER of a client being dropped on us for a huge double AD weekend, and the supposed blaming of a third party for their obvious bandwidth issues I'm find it hard to find forgiveness in my heart.

As of 11:00PM PST the network seems to be working well. This is the first time in two days I have been able to play for half an hour without issues. It may have been because of the time of day, but the game played like the connection was back to normal.

If the game isn't back to normal sunday morning, I will expect 2 enchanted keys, 72 refined astral diamonds, and 10 epic dungeon keys given to me for each toon on my account monday morning as a refund for denying me access to my account. I can't even work my professions or invoke either.

Don't count on it. The past two days in STO I've had a half hour here and there where everything was smooth but then it started right back up again and stayed for hours. One minute it's fine, the next it's back to severe lag and connection issues.

I really have no idea wtf is going on.

ARC seems to launch the game and crash it according to my application event log...

I remember having similar problems on March 26, I think that is when Neverwinter went live for X-Box. If I recall correctly, it seemed liked comcast costumers were heavily affected when this happened. I don't know whats going on with Neverwinter and gateway but I have been streaming music and movies over my internet connection all day, with no issues. Keep fighting the good fight people and hopefully this issue will be resolved soon.

    Trace complete.

This my tracer after being on the phone with a comcast rep for the last two hours. He opened all my ports, even put in the suggested Neverwinter ports. Reset my DMZ and reentered my IPV6 manually. After all of this I am still lagging and getting server not responding so we did a tracer and he told me that where it drops it is not on comcast servers anymore and that the two ip address prior to the drop at 20 are unknown servers that he could not look up. So he came to the conclusion it is either cogentco or some strange server with those last two ip address causing the problem. Can someone please look into this?!

I did a network trace on my machine and the neverwinter game process never tried to hit the network, not sure it's a comcast issue. At least not for everyone. I fixed my issue by not using ARC (see a couple posts above).

    198.49.243.253 <--- https://www.findip-address.com/ shows as Cryptic
looks like it is probably someplace in the middle of the US
    I'm in the northeast.

VPN through California is definitely improved, so I think this is a regional issue.

I am amazed that no moderators were on the STO side. But I've looked at your conversation and as a tech support agent for a very large VOIP service the ping test after running it a few times confirms a cryptic time out on one of there routers. Now the router may not be set to respond back. But the test proves that all routers on the internet are working correctly with good time results. Now the question is where are the game servers. We're only pinging the patch servers. Now if the patch servers are at the same location as the game servers then it is a cryptic issue and blaming level3 is inaccurate since I came in on my pings through cogentco back bone.

This is really frustrating. The time to just get the character list up is turtle slow. Then, it kicks me out because of timeout issues. Then stutter, stutter, stutter, if I can even get in to play. Please Cryptic fix this. I like this game and pay money for it. If you like to continue to receive my money, fix the issue and get things running smoothly again. Guess I will give my money to someone else, SWTOR here I come.

I gave them a night to fix itand the best they could do was allow my launcher to finaly work. I still can't play theres no play button coming up. I'm off to alternate games as well. Say good buy to some future purchases Cryptic.
