Alchemy question

I've managed to get my Alchemy up to level 9. However at this point I'm stalled out. The crafting for Unstable Potion is no longer turning up even though I've unchecked both filter boxes. At level 9 I need 5 Basic Alchemical Knowledge and a quicksilver. Reward is 1200 XP.

The quicksilver I have a ton of. But zero Basic Alchemical Knowledge. I'd always gotten enough prior to this by crafting Unstable Potions repeatedly. But now Unstable Potion is not turning up. Is there a different material I can craft now to get the Basic Alchemical Knowledge I need to get past level 10?

Look for EXPERIMENTATION task. It *was* Unstable Potions. After a while it will be Primordial Goo and then it becomes something else. it's not always "Unstable Potions". The EXPERIMENTATION task is usually immediately above the Basic Alchemical Knowledge task (which shows the yellow XP icon) - it's the task that gives you the scrolls you need (if you're lucky as it relies on Random Number Generator).

PROTIP: Create a LOT of Aqua Vitae, Blue/Green Vitriols and buy a lot of Solvent. Later you'll need to buy some Quicksilver, Coal, and Brimstone (but not a lot of that). At higher levels you'll need to craft a LOT of yellow Vitriols and Aqua Regia. These are the main leveling ingredients.

The Alchemical Knowledge is gained through Experimentation tasks and is a random reward for those tasks. You might get the necessary two or three on the first set of attempts, and then again, you might need five tasks to get just one. Luckily much of the material required for those tasks can be bought for peanuts on the AH (it's usually potions and stuff).

And if you have excess AD to spend, you can level Alchemy from level 1 to level 20 in a matter of an hour or two. :)

I saved some AD myself and leveled Alchemy from 1 to 20 in 8 days.

Actually it's only random up to a point. After that point (no, I don't know what the point is, but I suspect it's once you've unlocked all the recipes that are available up to that point, though those do seem to be completely random as to whether or not you unlock one) you start getting the scrolls of alchemical knowledge as a guaranteed result until you have enough to move to the next level, after that it doesn't reward any at all until you've moved to the next level.
