Can you have companion and a store-bought companion active at the same time?

Can I have my cleric companion and a Zen Store-Bought Wolf active at the same time?

    Active, yes. Summoned, no. You can have up to 5 companions active at any time (and thus gain bonuses from those active companions).

    so I can only have 1 companion fighting with me? (Weak ranger, even at level 21 and can't always find a party)

    Correct. Only one can be summoned at a time.

    Consider using a tanking or healer companion, instead of a striker - the men at arms or shield maiden are tanks, and there's the apprentice healer.

    I have a cleric but she doesn't heal very well...

    I found my ranger to be one of the easier classes to solo with; Where do you feel you are having the most trouble? Are you using your dodge ability often? Are you favoring melee more than ranged? Is it a specific type of enemy that is troubling you most?
