Guardian Fighter or GWF for Tanking going forward. (Questions inside)

Hey guys!

I posted another thread about looking for GF resources and have found alot of the updated stuff that I could, same with GWF and have been doing alot of reading up on the changes coming in Mod4 in a few weeks, and it seems GWF are getting more rebalancing (and potentially some nerfs) and GF some tweaks and hopefully some buffs.

However it seems that people are still worried about GF's not being wanted for 'tanking' roles due to their low DPS and I've seen some say this is only for bleeding edge groups and those outgearing the content so for pugs and everyday stuff they're alright and others saying its not really that bad.

I may just invest time as I came back to the game for both a GWF and GF as a new main to level up and I enjoy tanking but I'm wondering if in the long run its really going to be a necessity and if I"m going to have to be relegated to pug groups and not getting invited to DD's when the timer is up (I know this is hard to predict with upcoming changes, just looking for general consensus) or if I should just roll DPS on the GWF (I like the warriors) and DPS with having an option to sort of 'tank' (unless that option is feasible going away from GWF).

Or am I just reading too much into it and should just 'play what I wannaplay' and not worry about it because content will come (I'm not worried about having it day 1 nor dealing with my fair share of pugs). (also looking for a new guild that may be willing to take tanks)

Until we see the entirety on Mod 4 we don't know really, I suggest you hop on Preview copy over a toon and start testing.

With that said, if it continues in the same direction it will probably be something around ( for a GF )

14k and below you will be needed

15k and above you will not be needed



Of course we can only speculate, I say play the class you like to play!

It sure seems that GF will have the tank/support role with the KV and IF changes. GWF will have the DPS role. Sents and DPS GF's will be fun but not mainstream it looks like.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have some time leveling up again obviously and working my way through gearing and the old campaigns which being a huge fan and being back and able to play I'm looking forward too.

Another question on the new paragon paths and all of that, some people (like in Amber's GF Guide) recommend going IV and Conqueror as the main tanking aspect and others recommend like tactician or protector and swordsman, is it a preference thing for GF tanks or is one actually recommend over the toher?

I'd go dps and crank out as much dps as you can from both classes. Unless the release drastically new content there is no place for true tanks in this game. At most you need someone that can get aggro on the adds and survive while kiting.

An interesting response which seems to be the general consensus amongst everyone right now, and for GF I'm assuming that would be Swordmaster/Conq unless I'm reading things wrong.

Will the Sentinel GWF have any new threat generation in Mod 4? Otherwise isn't a Sentinel just pointless in PvE?

Right now GWF tanks are the preferd tank but that will change mod 4

GF DPS still sucks, but it's been handily replaced by HUGE BURST.

Conq will be good for DPS but not for tanking as you will not have any DR mitigation feats. The Tactician and Protector cap stones are getting buffed and now offer potentially better tanking paths.

The GWF are getting a multitude of threat generating changes!
