Can't remove people from Friends list

I've been trying to trim my Friends list. However, I get the message "you are not friends with 'so-and-so" and it won't let me delete them from my list. I've run a search in the forum to see if this topic has been addressed before but came up with nothing.

Can anyone tell me how to remove other players from my friends list when the usual way (clicking delete) doesn't work?
