I think a subscription OPTION for this game would be an fantastic idea for a lot of players. I say option, I mean option. Rift has gone F2P (thank goodness) but has some great boons for those that actually want to pay monthly. I think it's a great idea.
I would pay up to 15 USD for the right privileges. Matter of fact I wouldn't even think twice if it were right. Let's look at possibilities and pluses for the player base as well as PWE.
For the Players!
1. Monthy Zen allowance. 1500 zen per month given.
-- This allows players access to a modest sum since thats what $15 buys you. If nothing else its keys that open the "addiction" of playing the lockbox lotto.
2. Experience Boost.
-- Nothing serious since the climb is pretty quick through the story line anyway. BUT this boost should extend to companions. If you are already a level 60, it would be nice to get a new companion up to our standards without having to waste a slot on a training rune.
3. Gold Allowance. Scaled with level if possible.
-- Gold is still quite useful in game. Potions, buffs, and crafting supplies are just a start. Some of the squishier builds know exactly how hard it is to spend every copper on health pots just to use them all in a few encounters.
4. Costume. Something befitting a supporter.
-- How about some wardrobe items that really scream how much you love the game and Cryptic (not PWE, sorry PWE you didn't build the game, they did).
5. Subscription based mount allowance. Per renew of course.
-- Maybe you guys have a new mount in mind, maybe its only an idea. What if you let your subscribers toy with said mount for the month. Next month you relieve us of said mount and hand us a new one. As long we subscribe we get to play with unique mounts per month. Even if they already exist, just to swap out every now and then would be fun. But please make them NO LESS then 110% speed. That is almost an addiction in itself.
For PWE
1. You make money! You guys like money! Money keeps this game going and we like the game so it works out for both of us
2. Opens options for players that want AD and Zen. It's much easier to justify a subscription in the mind of the player than it is a possible one time purchase of who knows what. Those options open up possibilities for more players and more players means what. . .MORE MONEY! Now you're getting it ;p
So, players, would you subscribe for these kinds of benefits. What would you like to see happen if sub was an option. Please keep in mind that it's still a business so don't go crazy. I'm looking for a real conversation here ;p

Hardly. Subscription models are far from dead. My experience with this game has reinforced in my mind all the finer aspects of getting everything the game has to offer for a flat fee and I'm sure countless others have left F2P games with that same feeling.
LOL! source please? and no please don't use the 8 year old game we all know WoW as an example , games like Wildstar and ESO give you everything for a flat fee , or in other words ,if you see a mount you really like you don't have to spend $30 dollars getting it , if you need more bank space or storage bags you don't need to spend $10 , if you want to get overpowered enchantments you don't need to spend a fortune on lockbox keys etc etc .
This game really does have a lot of potential and I do actually really like it, the combat system is in my opinion really quite good and I love the graphics , especially on higher settings , the entire cash shop portion of the game however has completely turned me off of F2P games in future , people say that it is only pay for convenience but that is complete nonsense , especially considering the hugely OP enchantments that came exclusively from the Nightmare lockboxes .
Then on top of that you have non existent support both in game and through the ticket system with peoples issues either being completely ignored and their ticket being closed as 'spam' or everybody getting automated responses that offer no assistance whatsoever and this is also due to the simple fact that this type of business model draws in nowhere near the kind of money necessary to run a modern MMO type game.
I completely agree, I would rather pay a sub, this game however DOES NOT have enough content to support a sub unforunately, the Zen/Shop issues are the biggest turn off and the developers know this of course...
If the prices in the zen market were reasonable, I would probably buy a pack or two myself, however they are not and never will be, so that leaves me out. I enjoy the game, it has a lot of potential, but i am not wasting money on non existant items...
If they changed it to a subscription based model with a monthly zen bonus and say 4-6 char slots I would be quite satisfied as long as new content was added as well...
I have over 200 lockboxes I can never open as I cannot see how I would ever have enough money to purchase that many keys except to go zen mad or use a credit farmer (no thanks...)
The only thing I probably do need is a retrain skill token, apart from that, the rest in the zen store seems to be just mostly cosmetic or decorative stuff, I have no interest in anything like that...
I honestly don't understand how it's so hard for people to budget themselves. If you think $15 a month is a fair price to pay for supporting a game you like, buy 1500 zen a month and play how you like. That's pretty much what I do, except that I tend to buy 5000 Zen every three months.

Let's just say that the game was fitted for the possibility of a sub model. I feel confident in saying that this sort of game would do well if you got what you paid for, which more or less comes down to a more consistent flow of polished content. The Zen store probably wouldn't exist if it did have that model, meaning that mounts, enchants, etc would be obtainable through in-game means which I would MUCH prefer. Not sure how well they're doing with the cash shop but it must be decent.
But that's the problem , $15 is enough to buy half a mount , that is insane , especially when you consider that the next maintenance will probably add one that looks even better or cooler therefore leaving the person who spent $30 dollars quite annoyed and jaded with the whole system.
Right on! crazy, pixel addictive or just pure stupidity..........
I too would pay for a sub but subs wouldn't kill the Zen store, both CO & STO have subs and a well stocked Zen store. I will have to say that the Zen stores in Cryptic's other two titles are more reasonable on prices for things they sell in them. Also if you sub in the other titles you get 500 Zen a month which is a nice perk.
(seriously, I'm curious. The only f2p+sub games I'm familiar with started as pay games.)
and maybe they would focus more on the content and keeping players, than making money, here and now. (We all have rent to pay so I fully understand)
If sub should be about getting free stuff, there have to be more to it than just what you normally would get for the sub fee, and we can only take a certain amount of companions and mounts and other cosmetics.
Anyway, I would be up for a subscription model and it would be great if there were more than one to choose from, but I don't think it will happen.
If this game went Sub based they would have to Ahere to a whole different set of consumer rules, which they never will do. end of.
As pointed out by the Moderator reply, this game was designed and built from day 1 to be Free to play. it would be easier for them to design and build a whole new game than to change this one,
Online games can change from Sub based to Free to play fairly easily but the other way around is a whole different ball game
I can't think of any real ones off the top of my head. IMO mixing sub and ftp models is a bad idea. It leads to strife within the player base. As well as issues of fairness. For a multitude of reasons, ftp games want the free players around. They tend to not stay if they feel like second class citizens though. And that happens a lot with a mixed model.
Closest games I can think of that started out ftp with a sub would be Wizard101 and Pirate101. (A couple of games geared toward younger audiences.) But honestly I don't think those games even deserve the ftp title. Its more like an unlimited trial because you can't advance past the starting areas without buying areas or subbing.
^^
THIS.....
I came over to NW from STO another cryptic game that used to be sub but went F2P but still kept its sub option but the problem with that is there doing the same crappy stuff there so wont be going back to STO.
As for bioware I don't think they actually had to learn a hard lesson I think they had to adapt with a new game that didn't have a lot of endgame at launch so they lost some ppl but they were smart enough to allow ppl to come back and check the game out with there take on F2P and I can attest they are getting a lot of players back who incidentally are re subbing including me and the game is better than ever Im having a blast.
And to tell you the truth I think im going to get more bang for my buck with my sub there then I got from NW and will probably spend less money than I did here with the so called "F2P model".

Then City of Villains came along. Hooboy. Forum rage at that. In the end, though.....it still added more to the game than hurt it, IMHO.
Cut to several years later and Going Rogue. A graphics update, new zone, content, things were booming.
Then free to play hit. Paragon left in the option to keep paying your sub, however and started a new veteran reward system. The longer you had, the more ingame perk stuff you acquired. Most people could fill the available perks and bonuses on day one.
Me? No, I'd come along shortly before the release of CoV. But y'know what? I kept right on paying my sub. Why?
1) The game was just plain fun. I can get behind that.
2) The game was made with not only the goal of making money, but to also put out a quality product. I can get behind that, too.
3) After so long( at the time it was just a smidge over five years, iirc when the changeover hit.) I didn't want things to change for me.
This game?
1) Combat is fun. That is literally the ONLY THING THAT IS FUN about this game. The gameplay I have experienced formed this opinion.
2) This game -seems- to be quality, but it's only a shell over a money pit. Again, my experiences in this game coupled with seeing this company time and again ignore bug reports and complaints unless those bugs affect the store or astral diamonds or zen in any way reinforce this opinion.
3) This game will never get that kind of devotion and loyalty from me, mainly because of the two above reasons. I'd certainly NEVER pay a sub for this game unless the quality of gameplay and quantity of content were VASTLY improved.
Again, this is merely my opinion, formed through my experiences with this game and this company in general.
I hear all of this hype about Wildstar and TESO...I can't speak for Wildstar but as a TESO beta tester I just don't see a sub model lasting and Ncsoft is a cruel taskmaster unless they see WoW like sub numbers they will have no problem sending that game F2P or shutting it's doors, just look at the carnage that has come before it.
Anyway I'll stand by my opinion, I don't see the sub model as viable any longer.
So how much is the monthly subscription fee you have in mind? $15? For $15 a month you want $15 worth in zen plus a long list of benefits? That means PWE will be making less, way way less. Only idiots will invest huge money to make an online game, find it very profitable, and then change it to subscription based and see its profit all go down the toilet.
BTW, you quoted a really really poor example in Rift. In case if you don't know, Trion is closing up their purely subscription based Rift game in China, and converting their Russian Rift game from subscription to f2p under their EU operation. They chalked up huge loss in subscription based Rift.
FFXIV is another example of failed subscription based game. It failed so badly it has to charge nothing and redevelop the whole game for a long time. The Realm did not reborn smoothly neither. I am looking for Square Enix to call it the Final Chapter of their MMO Fantasy and exit the MMO market completely in the not too distant future.
Ummmmm you must have been living under a rock FFXIV is kicking *** and taking names since relaunch, so much so they had to suspend sales because the servers were so crowded.
I know that doesn't help my argument but even I acknowledge that.
ROFL. Those were bots taking advantage of the free time. They won't last 2 months. If everybody mass login every character in the starting zone at the first few days of launch means a great success then SimCity would be the best ever MMO. How come all everybody said SimCity is a huge failure?
