So I just respec'ed to try out Icy Rays. It quite honestly seems like a total waste. I couldn't observe much effect from it. But maybe I am using it wrong. Could someone who likes Icy Rays please explain the most effective use of it? (I was trying to use it on a single target.)

Its mostly used on PVP for the freeze effect it applies, and it also never misses (it will follow your target, even if they go behind a wall), hence why it becomes so usefull on 1v1 pvp. But for pve, i wouldn't recommend it, if thats your case.

Icy Rays is very strong in PVP. Highest crit I've had since last patch is 17k with my Greater Vorpal. You need a few of the "cold feats" along with Chilling Presence passive to get the most damage out of it.

It's also good to mark TRs. If you use just one "plink" of it without the other, it puts a lovely little blue arrow right above your stealthy friend.

Icy Rays is pretty awkward to use presently.

You're supposed to press tab twice over one or two enemies, but presently it requires far many more presses before discharging and actually going on cooldown.

I'm not impressed by ray encounter spells overall and the single target setup ([tab]Ice Rays, Ray of Enfeeblement, Chill Strike, Conduit of Ice) is one of the setups I've seen that I like the least. You kind of need it for bosses, but it's never felt all that impressive for me - though I'd bet a good deal of that is mostly thanks to the Ice Rays awkwardness.

It's great in the tab slot for PvP. It NEVER misses. That also means it can't be dodged. It puts TR and other CW in their place in PvP. It's also great for the Boss 3 fight in MC.

Check out how many AP it gives you, by far the most AP of any of our single target spells except Entangle. To me that seems to be its purpose, other than providing a 4th single target spell that does half decent damage.

    This bug is quite annoying.

That said, I think Icy Rays is one of the most innovative and fun single-target skills in the game and I would not want to see it changed!

I'd love to know from someone who has Greater Lightning if it it procs multiple chains when in the Spell Mastery slot? I ask because the last time I had a proccing enchant (Plague Fire), it would proc the damage component on multiple enemies in a wide area around the single target in the tab slot.

the beauty of it is that it roots your target and skill itself can not be dodged, plus high base dmg, it is a skill u will use and love.

Correction, just pugged a FH, lightning will hit everything you can see with tabbed IR. My bad, I've been clericing it for my guild for the last month or so.

one of the few single target spells you have even though its bugged and will proc your weapon enchant in a 5 mile radius. It should be used in any single target fight you have if you want the most damage. Unless you want to cheese/exploit high vizier set bonus instead use repel.

Actually that's not a good thing in PVE. You'll get way too much aggro and CWs already get too much anyway.

Good damage and good in pvp but I hate that I need to press tab multiple times.

Use it to your advantage. I use the first "plink" to mark TRs before they go into stealth. Arrow stays above them even in stealth.

You have to press icy ray 3 times!

Two to dish out and a 3rd to the counter to start!

But it has good damage with the feat I know.

Yeah same here :) Otherwise, the Icy Rays will look like they are always available hehe, wouldn't that be awesome.

Also, another bug with the spell. If not slotted in Mastery, you can mash the cast button for sometimes unpredictable results, in my case it shoots the spell 2-3 times in a 4-5 secs period... I never done any extensive testing for this though, I only use the spell while on MC's last boss and thins are kinda heated for me to concentrate if the sounds I hear are actually real casts with real damage.

Another Bug I have been seeing lately is if you are right on the edge of its range and begin the casting animation (First tab hit) and then your target moves out of range whilst you spam the second Tab hit Icy rays goes onto a Cool Down with out actually firing the spell off.

If speced properly and TABed, it deals MASSIVE damage, somewhere near Ice Knife.
