How to set follow distance

I have NPCs set to follow, which they do - but too closely. I have a horse that makes the character look like a centaur when it stops on top of him!

How can the follow distance be set? I notice companions keep a respectable distance.

They will all follow too close, it is quite annoying. :( There is no setting to change it. Would be nice though. I'd rather them accompany the player like companions do, instead of hold on to the back of their pants. :p

you usually can speed up the follow and they will run faster, maybe try putting a - behind the number speed

I have not used it yet but I am told if you use guards instead of NPC and have them follow the distance works, or at least they are not crowding your back pocket.

A work around is to use a marker at the end location, and have the Follow NPC go away while spawning a new (look alike) one at the new spot. This will at least avoid them from covering any interaction object there,
