NPC props (e.g. lantern)?

I have an NPC using one of the Lantern animations. He's standing around with a lantern, before you talk to him.

I have another NPC using the same animation. She does not have a lantern. She'll do the animation once you talk to her, but without the lantern.

I've tested both in the editor, and in-game. Both are set to have the Lantern animation as their first animation in the Contact panel. I can't figure out why the second NPC doesn't get a lantern.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I've seen the same thing using the drinking animation. Some are holding mugs, some are not. I haven't figured out a rhyme or reason to it.
