I will start this thread off by saying that I truly enjoy this game and I think it has a lot of potential. Be that as it may, it currently has a couple of fatal flaws that I feel drastically cripples the quality of the game in comparison to other MMO's. Flaws that, luckily, are easy to iron out.
Let's begin with the basics: The most important part of playing an MMO is character progression. For the most part the character progression part of this game is good, but the means of progressing your character are currently flawed. Logging on to the game, I find that unless Dungeon Delves or perhaps the Gauntlygrym event is active, I have absolutely nothing to do. Running a dungeon outside of dungeon delves is generally a waste of time, and the same goes for PvP, foundries, or skirmishes. In this post I will try to suggest some changes that I think would greatly improve my experience in playing this game. Bear in mind that I did my best to come up with changes that are easy to implement and I fully well realize that in most cases there are better solutions that, unfortunately, require too much attention from the developers at this time.
1. PvP
I'm not going to get into a hefty discussion about how PvP in this game is unbalanced, I honestly do not care. My problem with the PvP in this game is that it simply is not rewarding. The gear obtainable from PvP is similar to T1 quality (which I guess is fine) but takes so little time to obtain that the only time any sane person would do PvP is either while leveling or shortly after hitting 60. Even then, you're likely to have enough AD from 1-60 to simply buy the PvP gear (or equivalent gear) from the auction house and never set foot in a PvP instance again. I therefore propose the following change:
Allow glory to be exchanged for gold.
The game in its current state really has no good way of gathering gold. There's only one good way right now, and that still is PvP. The only problem is that it's done in a very stupid way. Currently you can buy minor battle potions for 1 glory, and each battle potion is worth 25 copper. Let's say you have 10000 glory on your character. This means 10000 minor battle potions or 25 gold. The problem? Nobody has time to buy 10000 battle potions. That's 500 stacks you have to purchase and sell. This takes more time than obtaining the glory itself. I propose that players should be able to simply exchange glory directly for gold, with a ratio of 1 glory for 25 copper.
Doing PvP now suddenly has meaning, earning cold cash for injury kits, potions, and maybe some enchanted keys. A quick fix which is very easy and gives glory value again.
2. Skirmishes
I really enjoyed doing skirmishes while leveling up. Although they didn't really give you any loot, I always did them during skirmish hour, mostly because at the time I thought the rewarded AD was actually a lot of money (boy was I wrong). Once you reach level 60, the skirmish hour is just wasted time. My suggestion:
Make epic versions of skirmishes and instead of rewarding AD, reward enchantments
Let's say you do a level 60 epic skirmish. You don't get AD from the end chest, but instead a random assortment of enchantments, for example a handful of r4's. During skirmish hour, you get a handful of r4's + an r5. Suddenly running skirmishes at level 60 has meaning, and the players have yet more content to feast their eyes upon. Let's face it, the skirmishes are already there. All that needs to be done is to scale them for higher levels.
3. Dungeon delves
Ah, and here we are, at the crux of the problem. Once I hit level 60 I quickly realized that running dungeons outside of dungeon delves is a waste of time. It's a shame. After being 60 for only a day or two I pretty much stopped playing except for either CN (which only a fraction of the playerbase seems to participate in) or during the DD hour. The loot tables on bosses are too diluted, and doing dungeons outside of dungeon delves usually leaves you feeling pretty empty. Now don't get me wrong, I love the extra incentive to run dungeons at a particular time of the day (gets everyone all riled up) but the difference between DD and non-DD is simply too large. I therefore propose the following:
Have the DD chest active during all hours, but make the loot from the chest BoP outside of DD.
With this change you can run dungeons to gear your characters outside of DD, but the extra incentive to run it within DD is still there, getting BoE gear that you can sell on the auction house! Finally:
4. Foundries
I think the foundry-system in this game is absolutely fantastic, but the rewards also need a lot of work. When I leveled my second character I did a ton of foundries. Much to my dismay, doing foundries was a lot slower in terms of leveling fast than simply doing quests. Even within foundry hour (which gives a whooping 150% extra experience for quest completion) it barely gave me the same amount of experience/hour as simply doing regular quests. Quests I've already done on another character.
I've played a couple of really great foundry quests, quests which I really lose myself in, explore everything, talk to all the npc's. It's really fantastic, so why is doing foundries so unrewarding? I realize that cryptic is scared of people exploiting the foundry system, but come on, there is absolutely zero incentive to do foundry quests once you've reached level 60! Give some extra rewards during foundry hour. For example some of those glory or xp-boosters that you can transfer to alts, or maybe give a chance to obtain a celestial or ardent coin from the end chest (and the chance is directly related to the length of the quest). Give us an incentive, Cryptic. I think a big portion of the playerbase don't even try foundry quests, even though it's probably one of the more redeeming features this game has.
Anyway, I know I can't speak for everyone, but personally I really feel like if the aforementioned changes were implemented, I would always have incentive to play this game, no matter what time of the day I log on. At the moment I only log on a couple hours each day during DD and maybe gauntlygrym. For the first time ever I find myself with an MMO I would like to play more, but I simply do not have the incentive!
Thoughts?
