I was trying to buy two items off the auction house. Really wanted to get these two, so I was following the auction during the last minutes just in case anyone tried to outbid me.
The first item was outbidded 15 seconds before expiration. I saw that and clicked "Place a Bid" but the button was grayed out. I refreshed the window, but it was still grayed out, so I couldn't place a bid even though i wanted to and still had a few seconds left. So I lost the auction.
The second item looked fine. I was the high bidder all along. And I watched the timer: 3 seconds... 2 seconds... 1 second... and BANG I was outbid by someone else. Literally fractions of a second before expiration.
So my question is: What the  is going on? How are people able to bid in the very last second while I'm not even able to bid again 15 seconds before expiration? Are people using some sort of bloody scripts or am I missing something here?
don't worry wont have to buy items anymore, go get them yourself now

Thanks, I guess, but that didn't really answer my question.
I like to trade. And I don't like being unable to bid when I am sitting there with enough hard earned Astral Diamonds ready. An auction result should be based on the amounts of AD people want to bid - not on some weird timing issue. That's also unfair to the seller: I wanted to bid more! So I am looking to understand what the heck is going on.
That has happened to me as well. I'm assuming it's some kind of bug where the displayed time does not match exactly with the actual time of the auction.
The bidding closes 50 seconds before expiration, however there might be a delay in the info updating...i know how frustrating this is, i was really pissed when i discovered this as well..yeah, go ahead and spend hours or days following an auction just to have random kid bid at 51 seconds before auction expires and you cant do anything about it afterwards, its fun ...srsly in this game you are able to be a ninja in just about anything. I fail to comprehend why on earth they haven't implemented a system that would extend the auction for 2-3 mins if bids are made close to expiration time. Then again, it would be a convenient and logical thing to do, so i guess it's a no-go zone for the dev's

Noniuss, that clears things up a lot. Thanks.
I am pretty sure that is exactly what happened: Some timing ninja bidding 51 seconds before the auction expired and the info not updating right away.
And yes, it's very odd way to implement an auction house favoring random timing ninjas or even script users (if they are not around, I guess they'll be pretty soon).

Auctions used to be extended if a bid was made too close to the ending time. The issue was that it extended time by an hour I think and could be extended indefinitely. I think cryptic removed it because auctions were taking too long. It's pretty stupid since they could have just reduced the extension duration to 5 mins rather than removing this mechanic altogether.

Why don't they just implement autobidding like on eBay: You set your max bid, and then the system automatically bids the lowest necessary amount (until it reaches your max bid). So if you bid 1000 AD and you're the only bidder then you can still get the item for 1 AD. That would solve a lot of problems.

Perhaps that is technology that PW doesn't currently have OR PW is addressing more glaring issues prior to launch. I believe they will get around to updating the bidding system.
