The Anauroch is GONE?

Wow. I had this long, involved, full, rich, and (for me) fun backstory for my main character that involved the Anauroch desert. I was doing a bunch of research for a campaign I wanted to build in the Foundry based on this character only to find out that according to lore, this game year represents the end of the Anauroch?

I have been trying to read up on it, but not sure where to find information as to what the Anauroch was like for the "past few years", and exactly what it is today. What happened to the Bedine? To the Zhentarim and their oasis trade route? There seems to be a lack of good, solid, huge, epic deserts in the Forgotten Realms, and the Anauroch was just close enough to Neverwinter...

I'm a little lost at the moment, wondering if people can link some articles about the recent and current Anauroch and suggest perhaps other deserts?

I thought I should mention that I am familiar with Mulhorand/Raurin, but there seems to be so little current information, meaning game-year current, and I was so stunned to discover the entire Anauroch is gone, I have no idea what to expect for other areas. The Anaurock was so well detailed, I just don't know how much detail there is for Mulhorand/Raurin. Any good links?

The Anauroch has been gone since the Spellplague. Netheril, returned from the Shadowfell, took its place.

Right, but what I mean is that this "game year", the actual desert itself is gone. The sands replaced. I was using the setting. Oh well.

The in-game event for 5th edition D&D is called "the sundering", and will undo everything that happened during 4th edition and the Spellplague. During the sundering, Ao will resurrect all the gods that were killed during the time of troubles, rewrite the tablets of fate that describe the rules that bind the gods to existence, create a new hierarchy for the divine beings, and restore returned Aber-Toril to two different worlds, replacing the lands that were intermingled to their proper places. At the end of the sundering, the forgotten realms will be for the most part back to the way it was during 3rd edition. If this returns the Anauroch desert to exactly the way it was pre-spellplague, or if it fixes the elemental chaos, remains to be seen.

5th edition is set to release in August.

I guess my follow-up question would be, how is Neverwinter MMO going to handle it? If I wanted my quests and characters to fit within the framework of this MMO...

Good question. I would suspect that we will be sticking with 4th Ed. rules here. To change would require a major rework of the internals of the game. Not to mention the entire Chasm region would have to be redesigned. In August there will still be some heavy duty bug fixing going on, to divert resources for the change, and then restart with the bug fixes would not be good for any number of reasons. I could be mistaken though. Alot will depend upon the contract between Cryptic and WOTC. Mere speculation at this point, I'm sure PWE will address this over the summer.
