A friendly warning for AH newbie users

Hello there. I'm recently seeing an increase of rip-offs or absurd sales in the AH, so I think it's fair to give a warning to people not used to the AH and may be interested on using it efficiently.

- Companions for sale. Usually people try to sell wrong purchases, but instead of just trying to get their actual purchase value (most are 2000 Zen), they try to trick you to buy them because they're sold in AD, so the value is masked.

For instance, I've seen an Ioun Stone of Allure for 850 k AD. This stone is a lot more expensive than one you'd get from converting AD into Zen and directly purchasing it in the Zen Store. At least in Mindflayer, the current exchange rates are about 350 AD per Zen, meaning that 35 k AD = 100 Zen, 350 k = 1000 Zen, 700 k = 2000 Zen, basically the stone's worth. As you can see, the seller intends to rip you off a 150 k benefit only based on your misinformation.

However, if you see a Nightmare mount for about 850 k AD, it's very worth its price. Consider this. The droprate for a Heavy Nightmare Mount is about 6-4% (common notion aprox) from lockboxes. 850 k is about 25 euros, cheaper than most purple mounts. So if you don't want to gamble all that money, you can directly pick it and you'll get what you want! They used to be about 2 million, which was indeed a rip-off, but that was at day of release and people used to have more AD from Founder Packs.

Last thing: if you intend to sell something from buy-out, do not put ridiculous bid values. Many people (incluiding myself) are willing to track the remaining time for an auction if it means a substancial saving of value. I got a Divine Emissary Helm for 55 k when its actual value is about 110 k, just because the seller allowed for a 55 k bid. I just waited until the auction was about 10 s remaining and made my bid.

So, if you want to sell a piece of gear or item for a good worth, make the difference less than 1k or even something like: 199.999, buyout 200.000.

I hope these advices help. Happy purchases!

Regarding your first point, it's a good one. It's also better to check on the rates before buying stuff. But I wouldn't call it selling on misinformation yet. This is because the zen/AD rate can change. What if the day the person put the companion, the price of it was the same or close to the AD/Zen rate and then after 2 days, the rate dropped? So it's not like the sellers are all out to rip you off :)

And yeah, good point on the bid/buyout info. I see so many items being sold for lower price because of this

yeah also watch for guys trying to trade you after a run, if you dont know the value of an item. say he wants to trade you your boots drop for his wep drop, ,make sure you dont give up a item worth 2.5 mill for a item worth 4k

Everytime I do stuff like this I get outbid anyway... at -2m... or at -10m...
I wish I understood how the time limits actually work. The amount it goes into the negatives seems random to me.

Good advice---the vast majority of zen purchasable items on Dragon are above the actual zen cost of simply using the exchange and buying them yourself.

Another couple pieces of advice for the new auction house user

    1. Don't be greedy. Seriously, just because you'd love to get three thousand AD for your Axe of Gruumsh(level 10 or so green skirmish drop) doesn't mean you will. One guy is probably a thief trying to turn a quick buck, twenty is probably some serious head-in-cloud action on the part of many, especially when there are two hundred available for ten or less.

    2. For the love of god, put a buyout on leveling gear. A full blown auction is all good for end game stuff that a person may use for months, but you're wasting your time to put the initial bid at a reasonable purchase price, a four day auction, and no buyout. I went nearly thirty levels without a single AH purchase and 600k AD in my account, full willing to spend some but outleveling any gear that I might have considered long before the auctions would have ever ended. If you actually want that level 18 blue to sell, put a buyout on it.

Of course, the generic zen store mounts apply to all the characters on your account, so if you have a number of alts...... /shrug :)

But, yeah - if you really want the box mount, that's a different story.

    This.
If someone level 18 wants to buy your item, buy the time the auction is over, they will be many levels above it, and the item will be useless. So, if the item has a level below 60, put a buyout on it or don't bother putting on the AH.

I was wondering how that works.

Does it make it so every future char you make will get the mount once you've purchased it.

Or does it just give it to every existing char once you've purchased it?

    And @OP.

If you intend to sell something with B/O you can always just put bid cheap and leave it at 5 days and just cancel it if it never sells lol.

This is what Cryptic means when they describe "one for every character" - meaning only one at a time for each character, but can be freely claimed and reclaimed by every character on your account, including future characters you haven't even created yet. Forever.

    Sticky please!

Great post we need much more positive information that helps folks instead of screaming into the wind. A lot of us was having this conversation about this very thing, we even went as far as sending a suggestion to the devs that Items like that have a hard cap placed on them that was no more than 15% the exchange value, because as it stands now no one will end up winning soon everyone but the very new (which is a limited market) will know this and no one will buy and the AH will have a lot of expiring overpriced items. They should at least put a notice to check the current value of the item being sold before you make a purchase.
