So what is the point of having an origin and deity in character creation?

They don't seem to have any in-game relevance whatsoever, besides giving you different titles.

Or will it be something for later content?

Well, what's the point of naming your character, changing appearance, titles, and writing a bio? :)

Though who knows, maybe it'll matter later on.

    Roleplaying, mostly.
    Characters:
    - Titania Silverblade, the Iron Rose of Myth Drannor (Lvl 60 GWF, Destroyer)
    - Gwyneth, the Cowardly Cat Burglar Drowling (Lvl 60 TR, Saboteur)
    - Lady Rowanne Firehair, Heartwarder of Sune (Lvl 33 DC)
    - Satella, Sensate (LvL 44 CW, Renegade, Non-Active)

I'm pretty certain Deity has something to do with Invocation. Not sure what, though. Maybe it affects the 15 minute buff you get, although that seems pretty random for the most part.
As for Origin, so far I haven't seen it do anything other than give a different Title.

Both Origin and Deity are role playing fluff, as they have been in most D&D cRPGs.
Which is a shame as they could be used to flavour the Invocations & possibly alter some quests, and some NPC conversations, but as with all the developers before them Cryptic has missed an opportunity.

I guess this is the downside of cPRGs compaired to PnP :)

It is for Roleplaying Purposes. it needs to be understood that Neverwinter games and DnD in General have always had a strong roleplaying following. I was very disappointed in the fact that once in game the role-playing aspects were gone. I also found it annoying that there were no evil deities to choose from.

One would imagine a MMORPG would still be an RPG, hence you know, people ...role play...
At least that was before wowkiddies turned the genre in a subset of the shooter genre

Well for the game purpose all the characters are supposed to be at best neutral. Even the HoTN Drow is a renegade. It will be interesting seeing if the Drow offered after 60 days is a 'proper' Drow or a renegade

It seems certain quest mini-arcs are unlocked by race.

I figure what they are going for is a game that takes you on different story paths depending on who you are and where you come from.

I suspect when the game is fleshed out there will be flavor that makes those choices, if not important, at least make a difference.

D&D was designed to be a "Goodies vs Evil" game, so being able to chose from evil deities is often void from the players. I understand that some can find RPing evil characters atractive, but this isn't quite the best type of game for it. You're supposed to be the hero (or anti-hero at best), not the villain.

My god is kelemvor. The selection gives me a buff that makes me click my mouse buttons harder when I fight against undead.

The region of origin and the religion choices give you access to titles, and that is pretty much it.

You can't pick evil deities because you can't really play evil characters. This isn't Eberron.

I'm pretty sure I was in a Foundry mission once where a dialog option was grayed out because I was not a worshipper of some specific Deity... if that's the case (and the dialog entry was not improperly built and was looking for class and assuming that class would worship that deity, etc) then it looks like the Deity you chose could be used to direct story flow in Foundry missions (and presumably in official missions they introduce later).

Exactly, without things like that are the reason we aren't all stick figures named 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.. Its all about of a theme. Your character may focus solely on a Deity for there them, such as the colors they wear to the way they act or the Order they belong to.
