Open world is great, I can see people ninjaing my quest objectives, or queue in line to kill some rare npc needed for a quest. It definitely helps immersion and would probably bring the real "D&D feeling".
There're many good reasons for non-open world. Mostly reasons like there's no real benefit cause not everyone can see everyone at the same time anyway, it implies merging of zone instances instead of creating zone instances on demand, etc.
And yes even open world games uses zone instances. They're just seamlessly integrated

You can have instanced missions in an open world MMO.
Ofcourse this wont change at all, but how the bloody hell can some people not want an open world in 2013?
Nobody likes the instanced worlds at all, and the people who voted against are just heroic fanboys trying to front.
I think we can all agree that instancing and sharding, like many smaller firms do these days, are due to server load balancing, but fact is, it breaks immersion ofthe world around you - and its the reason I never really play these f2p games alot, and I wont stick around in neverwitner that long.

While I agree an open world would be nice the problem with that is that you're talking about using vastly more resources
You would be building things similar to NWN 1 rather than NWN 2
Personally so long as the places we go to are fairly large and they keep adding POIs to the map as a whole (considering right now we only have one teeny tiny portion of the sword coast) I'm good with it

Probably because the sheer number of things you have to roll in a fully open world is staggering, either that or the party just gets distracted by anything and everything. (anecdotal admittedly)

Yes, D&D (the one I played till the end of the 90s at least) wasn't built for OW.
Remember that this instances killed a Age of Conan.Sometimes i just feel kinda alone with all that instances and even more coridors.How i would love to travel on open land with a party...

?? Not only AoC is fine now (what 'killed' it was that after lvl 20 there wasn't real content or itemization but they ameliorated it), but AoC is Open World. As much as GW2 for example

Eh. I've played plenty of OW campaigns. We usually had few long term goals (e.g. help overthrow the king) but we got to decide how we were going to go about doing it. We weren't constantly fighting in sewers, towers and narrow streets. Granted, it requires a lot of effort and imagination from the GM, but those were also the most memorable stories.
Rules don't dictate what kind of games you have to run.
I'm fine with zones. They're relatively large, though I wouldn't mind if some were a bit more wide open. Currently though, the zones are large enough that a mount feels beneficial. Not so large that we need a "hearth" ability, which we don't have (not counting the 4k scroll). I get how open worlds are nice in some games, but I'm just not missing it here.
I'd hate to see how much they would charge you to use quick travel transports if they did have an open world.

Maybe it changes in the last 20 levels but every zone so far has been full of either narrow corridors or sligthly wider spaces but with groups of mobs everywhere. Higher level mounts are only useful because of the reduced chance of getting dismounted.
Without an open world the whole exploration is missing. When you reach 60, you have been pretty much everywhere. What left is RE-doing content in epic mode (if you bother at all - because you can just buy all the gear off the auction house, so no incentive there). So basically, the game ends when you reach level 60. Sure there is the Foundry for more content, but again, no incentive at all to spend time on "amateur content".

It takes a lot of work to prevent open world from being boring. Usually it just means big empty spaces with nothing to do except kill the same mobs you kill in instanced zones. Neverwinter has the Foundry, which is about people creating interesting things to do in small spaces, instead of wandering around bored in big spaces.
ESO should have the "I started collecting every spoon in the realm because there's nothing else to do" style of open world gameplay that's missing from Neverwinter.
It is very instanced isnt it, and very linear, look at the Pirates region, a thin course that you follow.
A great MMO needs open world and great PvP etc, come on Neverwinter pull your socks up.
It is a free to play title, they cannot spend the amount of money spent on titles like Guild Wars 2. Yeah I know, it is a shocking revelation, open world costs a lot of money.

Even For STO they have said it is doable, costs is not the problem it is the work involved in converting it all.
FTP or not PW are massive and have more than enough resources.
For me is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Hellgate or Age of Conan or Borderlands or Fallen Earth enough "Open World". But games like Battlefield (only map list to select) is a no go for me.

Also this poll doesn't really matter since it would require a complete rewrite of the game so it's not ever going to happen.
There ARE advantages... in ranged oriented games. Can't play sniper if the world is too cramped.

No, because this is not STO.
But what is it then? A City for the guilds, shops and Story missions, with a list of maps to select? Like Gang Wars??
