Costume creation questions

Right then, I'm trying to make me some custom npcs for my content and whilst most of the controls are fine, I've run into two alarming roadblocks:
  1. Skirts!
    All armour available for the npcs is plagued by those odd little skirts! How do I de-skirt them? I know skirtless versions exist, my characters have them in-game! Also armour seems to be very greatly limited- I can pick a narrow range of player armours, which are customisable (in colours, etc) or from other presets, have other armours, which cannot be changed colour-wise at all? Is this right?
  2. Beards!
    How? There's sliders and dropdowns for every facial detail apart from these, mistake, oversight, or am I missing something here?

    You cannot remove the skirts or beards on existing NPCs.
