I'm playing, a friend is playing... I never really played an MMORPG before... how do we connect?
Same question. I have friends on the same shard who tell me their character name and search says they don't exist. I am totally put off by the quirky playername@handle thing. It might be useful to crossgame players of other Cryptic titles, but it doesn't do Jack for the new players.
I try and be nice, but some things are just not built to please anyone but a chosen few. Does the word intuitive come to mind when using this "social" tool?
the easiest way to add a friend to your friend list is through the zone chat.. this way you don't even need to know the @handle:
- make sure you are on the same shard and in the same zone (e.g. Dragon shard, Protector's Enclave zone (instance # does not matter at this point))
- one of you writes into the Zone chat, the other then right-clicks on his/her name and clicks Add as friend
you will then be able to form a party and change instance from the Social menu (O)
if you do not know how the instances work: to prevent a zone from being overcrowded there are multiple instances of the same zone (e.g. Protector's Enclave #31, Protector's Enclave #32, Protector's Enclave #33, ...) and the players are split between them.. when you run around the zone you can only see the players that are in the same instance as you are.. if you want to meet or travel with your friend you need to be in the same instance
to add a friend directly from the Social window you can type only the @handle directly into the add friend field (without the character name)
you can see your handle in the top-left corner of the launcher (after you log in, before clicking the PLAY button) or in-game if you type in any chat and then hover mouse cursor over your name (there will be a tooltip with charactername@handle)
Thanks for that.
We plan on doing exactly that tomorrow by telephone. Problem here is the actual search for the name is problematic for me and I think plenty of others.
We'll use your suggestion and yell on zone chat...:/
Ok, my friend confirmed he is also on Beholder and we met in the Protectors Enclave. Friendship established.
My new dilema is that on the trip to Blacklake we cannot see one another after arriving. Chat yes, through the friend "tell" channel. But invisible? I made him log and return to be sure and we returned to the Enclave and poof he appears. What is going on?
If its level difference the invite to party could be grayed out, but he also sees completely different people around the fire on his altered reality...is there shard slippage?

when you both arrive to Blacklake try to use the change instance option, although if you are in a party you should arrive in the same instance so I'm not sure what could be wrong
When that happens, there are 2 things I know of that you can do to fix it, other than both zoning back to the city.
One of you can right click the 'name/portrait' of the person you're grouped with and select 'Move to this players map instance' or something like that. It may make you wait 90 seconds or so.
The other thing you can do is click 'm' to open the big map, bottom right hand corner there's a buttom for change map instance. Look at his name and see what map instance he's in, then use the bottom right hand map button to change to that specific instance.
Thanks again all this is helping. I got a little closer by trying a few things and reading the cases. First, it told me that the players have to be on the same map for this to work. That meant that my friend being in a dungeon would have to surface first if I was up top.
Next, I also found like was mentioned, that right clicking his name gave me the option to join his instance from the friend menu. When I did this a new warning appeared telling me the instance he was in might be full and wouldn't allow it.
At this point I saw the listing of instances in that area and how many were playing in them and how many were full. Its a particular case of not being in a party right off the bat. Last of all, there is a 10 level difference between us and the Party Invite button was disabled for his character. The warning there said you are too low to be a team.

Bump
I spent the whole evening yesterday trying to add my brother who was in the same shard, at the same place (but i couldnt see him) but we failed to get any hit on our names in search for player.
Is there some kind of zone/level cap that restricts add player.
We both ragequitted due to this, so frustrating!

I looked in the FAQ and ended up here. It looks like you 1) have to be on the same map, 2) one or both have to hit the M key and join the other ones instance. I think meeting up and seeing each other in the Protectors Enclave is the easiest since it is a combined area and not broken up into 20 or more instances.
My friend was in the same Blacklake area but playing in a quest. I saw him on the friends list and right clicked his status on that menu. I then saw the various instances, their numbers and the number of players inside each one. It was then I noticed my friend in a grayed out one that read FULL.
The rules for all of this are buried in a mountain of data (if they are written at all), and not stickied to help include our friends in a better way.
