I played yesterday for an hour or so and thought I would give my impressions of the game. I'm sure I'll get a bunch of "your a ****" comments.
After 10 hours of download on Tuesday, I was able to get into the game with no problem Wednesday night. I will be playing with a set group of 3 or 4. One made a rogue, one will be a control wizard, and the other will be a tank. I made a Cleric.
I bought the guardian pack for $60 because I wanted the horse and the dog/dire wolf. I was expecting to see them in my inventory, but all that was there was a Blue Crate that could not be opened till I was level 5, so I figured all my pre-order stuff was in the box. (wrong!)
I made it easily enough to the first boss encounter when I encountered my first issue. After beating the Boss at the bridge, I spoke to the injured man. Went through his conversation and at the end was a cut scene and I was put into the city area. I figured the boss must have dropped some nice loot or had a chest or something but I could not go back into that area. This upset me for a while. Maybe there was no loot. Maybe there was. I never played this game before, and all the other games I played, a boss always dropped nice stuff. I figured I should have looked around the area before talking to the injured soldier. Still, it made me feel that I missed out on some thing good. If there was nothing there, at least let me look around to be sure.
Then I got into the city. Pretty nice. I was level 4 at that time. One more level till I could open the box and get my weapon, companion, ring, and what ever else I got with the $60 package. I do the vault quest and ding! Level 5. I open the Blue "Don't Open Till Christmas" box and .... none of my stuff was there.
Again, I'm sure there was some small print somewhere and I'll get "why didn't you look at blah blah" ... well I am a **** in this game and I did not know where to look and this is just a writeup of a ****.
I alt-tab'd out of the game and went online and found out that you have to go to the mail carrier to get your stuff. Whoot! I got my Guardian package, unloaded my dire-puppy (it is really small) named it, then loaded my weapon ... Wow! is that a nice weapon/holy symbol. I found a blue holy symbol with, something like +25 power, that I thought was the cat's meow, but this one had (I can't remember the exact numbers) 250 power and a lot of other things.
Edit: Oh I can not use my horse till level 20. Hope there are character banks!!
Then my friends called and I logged off to play Star Wars: The Old Republic.
All-in-all, I enjoyed the game. Playing a cleric was fun and I had no trouble with the starter area. Once I got my Logitech G-13 gamepad set up with the buttons it was easy to navigate and use the abilities. I did have trouble dodging out of the way because I was spamming my attacks and I guess they queue up and by the time the queue finished I did not have enough time to dodge. But I suppose with my companion, I will not be the sole focus of the enemies and will have more time to do other things then spam attack button.
I had no trouble getting into the game and had no wait. There was no lag.
Character creation was fun, but I could not find any information on what the selection of a particular deity would mean. I looked online but no information was there. I did find that unless you play a human for a cleric you would be gimped at the highest levels because you need two of the three extra feats to fill out critical feat trees; I was a little disappointed in that. I wanted to make a tiefling but did not want to gimp for my main character in a steady group. Especially, since I will be the healer, and I hear that at level 50 or so you can actually do some good healing.
I'm sure I'll get flamed for that last comment, but, hey, that's the word on the street. But it is only for cleric. The other classes don't have the human-or-gimp issue from what I've seen.
So-far-so-good!
