I think I've found another obstacle: room with timer can't be too far from the room you're currently in, otherwise mobs inside won't spawn. Can't tell exact lengths, but I've had my room 1k feets away and they didn't spawn and my event didn't trigger. So, be sure not to do it ^^

Yeah, there's a sweet spot there where they are close enough, but just far enough not to hear the combat.

For indoor rooms, would it be possible to have a cave room somewhere and set an enemy to patrol of the edge, and then have that enemy as the trigger timer?
Neverwinter players are stubborn things....until you strip them down to bone. (Cursed players, my flowers, MINE!) Oh how I plotted their demise.
