I'm a Devoted Cleric, and during beta made good use of the tank companions.
I was wondering if anyone did a comparison between the Zen Store Neverember Guard and the Guardian you can choose form the lvl 16 quest. Is there any advantage to the Zen store one other than being able to get it sooner?
The Neverember guard was actually removed from the Zen store.
However, I was able to level him up to 30. He was fairly decent, but not superior to the normal guardian companion, in my opinion (except being of blue rank). He couldn't hold aggro very well either.
All in all: not worth the price.

He didn't have a voice or idle animations (arm flexing, etc).. That was a plus.
Unless they have changed it, companions have quality assigned to them, the free ones you get at lvl 16 cannot reach as high of a level as the ones you buy from the store. That may change, you may get better free ones later but initially that is the big difference.
As sjiro mentioned that companion was removed from the Zen Store. For a tank companion I would honestly recommend the golem if you want to throw out some money at the very start of the game in a few days

I did not like the Golem, he was slow to get to the target and he was noisy as hell walking behind you....clung, clung , clung , clung ...aghh....it was so annoying

How does the golem compare to the guard tank you get at 16?

He could take a serious beatdown, and wasn't too bad at picking up adds - but did very little damage. You know, kind of what you'd expect out of a tank.
Usually, encounters all that tough, so I'd say he's only really useful when soloing and you REALLY need someone to tank a lot for you.

The Neverember Guard is back up. I'm trying to find out if he holds better aoe aggro/multi mob aggro taunt better than the golem does. I only need the tank for solo leveling.

You can purchase training thingys, manuals or tombs I think they were to train them higher. I guess you could say pay to "upgrade their quality".
