Is it just me (and all of my other game design friends here in Austin, Texas) that agrees that the graphics for this game is about 10 years behind where it needs to be?
I was excited to hear about one of my favorite games releasing an MMO but after I got into the beta and saw how it looked I was purely disgusted. I realize that this is a F2P game but that is no reason to have lackluster graphics in a game in 2013. This is a PC game people, not a Playstation!
Look...I dislike this game more than most for alot of different reasons.....
but graphics quality?....that aint one of them. graphics quantity....sure. Obviously, they plan on making everyone look the same unless you pay for a different look. *shrugs* just another check under the F2P model of death by a thousand microtransactions.
I've noticed that the only time I really notice the graphics is when I stop and concentrate on looking at them. Otherwise, I'm too busy kicking *** and taking names to notice how good or bad they are. I'm not 100% on board with the faces, but like I said, it's only when I'm not reading text or actively looking to critique the graphics - and I really don't have many complaints outside the characters.
I am thoroughly grateful that the characters don't look like the ones in Champions Online. To me (and if you like them, that's fine), they look like HAMSTER muppets made from Memory Foam™ (with apologies to the mentally challenged, muppets and Memory Foam). Worse yet, the characters in CO never seemed to run, they loped.
I think you don't have setting all maxed out, because i think NW looks overall beautiful

I have seen no blockiness, no artifacts, no tearing, no lag, and these are some of the best graphics I have seen in an MMO. I get beautiful bloom effects, lighting, shadows, and water looks great. Physics are also generally very good except that bodies fly through the air in slow motion. Kicked barrels and everything else move as you would expect. Textures on characters and the environment are clear, sharply detailed and three dimensional. Leather looks like leather, wood looks like wood and stone looks like stone. Animation is far from cutting edge in some places, but the horses are the best textured, modeled, and animated I have seen in any MMO or stand-alone computer game. Really amazing work there. I find both the NW art style and the graphics themselves superior to both GW2 and Tera, for example.
for everyone wanting fancy high res graphics and detailed renders do realize this poses two issues
1. Not every computer can handle that (this game can run easily on just 2gb of ram) personally I think this is a smart choice and using lower complexity shapes and renders has allowed me excellent performance while playing AND opened it to a larger audience.
2. The models take much longer to create resulting in longer delays between content releases. Gameplay is much much more important.
