I know that this is entirely different game from nwn but there is one role that is left out from the other classes. That my friend would be the support casting role, the wizard lacks this role and is primarily that cannon in the back blasting everything while you distract them.
But there is someone that can fulfill that role, our musical friend in the back with his flute and crossbow the bard. Who was there when we needed strength? Who was there when we needed weaker enemies? Who was there when we needed a leader to inspire us to press on through the dungeons of despair? Who was there to entertain us in the tavern?
Our magically talented musician was there to pick locks and pockets when the rogue
wasn't there, he was able to defend himself when everyone else was swarmed, and he had the clever togue that no one else had.
I missed the bard in other fantasy RPG'S but I'm hoping for him to be brought back in this game and I think others are too. I am willing to wait for an expansion if your adding him later but if it hasn't been considered think of the fans and look into your heart.

Well, technically, you'd need to remove the bard before bringing them back, but I too fully support the bard included in Neverwinter Online! Where else could such epic stories need the bard the most? And the powers of "Cutting Words" and "Viscous Mockery" (however you port them into this MMO) truly is iconic what a bard can do just with the power of their voice! Not even "sonic," but just the power of their elocution:

The bard is a must have epic companion to any adventure. Having a variety of classes to make up a party/ group is something I would love to see in this game. I see bards as a jack of all trades or could be, they can do all of the things mentioned in the OP and Truthseekers post, but should also be allowed to buff companions and debuff enemies. I remember playing a certain server on NWN that you had to be in a group to get through and having a bard made the area more manageable, the bard gave the group some good ol' bard buffs, slapped the monsters with appropriate debuffs and we ran into battle with the songs of the bard inspiring us to glory.
In one of the interviews in E3 there was a comment that there will be many classes, makes one wonder if that was a hinting that there will be a lot more classes than we expect. They might be keeping it under wraps, well... two long months before any confirmation though.

Yes they also said that introducing classes and races over time is their plan and their game engine makes it easy to make a new class or race later to add in game. So later, classes which community demands can be put in the game depending on feedback.
I am not sure where, but I also read that all the classes in pnp would be included but over time. So as I said, bard will be in; but the question is - "When?" At launch? in subsequent patches? within 5 years? within 1 year? - But I dont really think we will get answer to that question easily with mum-policy of devs to avoid disappointed users if that gets delayed.

The game will need more support style classes for sure. Bard is the obvious one that is currently unaccounted for. Games that boil down to optimized melee DPS and blastomancy get boring real quick, and generalizt support classes that elevate the entire party's performance are more attractive characters to some players than toons that are built to do one or two things really well.
Ive always said you can tell how good a game will be by how well developed its "specialist' or skill based classes are. All MMOs have the good melee fighting class(es), the good nuking ant DOTing class(es) and the good healing classes. Those are a given. Good bards and other support are not, and its this kind of variation from the norm of the holy triumvirate of tank, damager, healer, that a good game requires.

To be fair, you're using a 4E questionnaire in a 3.5 E world comparison.
100% pro bard being in the game, its been my favorite class for the longest time.
FFXI and Everquest have had the best incantations from what I have seen and the Rift one wasn't too shabby either.
I loved the FFXI one admittedly because they were super overpowered with what they brought to the party. Everybody wanted one, but you couldn't play that game by yourself so you lived with what you could grab. Plenty of party's worked and you could level with them, even entire party's of black mages called Manaburn groups, but bard was SOOOOOOO good. Pretty much imagine having a bard refresh encounter and daily powers with his songs and then that being the ONLY class able to do so, yeah that awesome. I remember I used to get hired to join party's . Though in that game Bards TRULY were helpless alone with little else but auto attacking.
Anyway enough reminiscing since this game works completely different. Hopefully their will be a cool bard class that provides unique buffs and awesomeness to the game. I'm worried though I could see this being almost too actiony to the point where you don't need group coordination as far as having class mix-matching so group dynamics wont matter.
Since the game-play seems to have almost nothing to do with pen and paper mechanically it's difficult to say what the Bard class should have in its toolkit imo.
With the action style combat the game seems to be going for I doubt sustain will matter much in an encounter.
I actually keep thinking about cooldown reducing powers. Or being able to follow up teammates ability's.
for example, trickster rogue uses his daily dealing 100 damage to 10 targets, then bard targets trickster rogue and uses a spell called like, echoing strike where he then deals 20 damage to every target hit and reduces aggro on himself and the rogue.
Or a song that adds hots onto cleric heals/ increases a buff strength. Or maybe they can reset a portion of the duration on buffs with an ability?
Obviously cc would be a portion as well, maybe refresh the duration on cc with diminishing returns.
I imagine the bard as a spot assistant for everyone in the group, in order to maintain this with classes being added in it would be cool if a lot of the bards abilities simply were effective with other people. Soloing shouldn't be a problem either since I am pretty sure they have talked about mercenaries, that could be almost like being a Pokemon master ha ha.
Anyway as I imagine the CORE of a Bard is being maybe 25% less effective than another class by yourself and 250% as effective when surrounded by a party, they really should be overpowered in comparison in a group.

Nahh, that would break the concept of balanced classes which is still carried over by the 4E inspiration. What will most likely be done, is instead of movement and temp HP granted by the bard in the tabletop is more focus on debuffing/negative attacks to enemies and buffing and positive attacks for players...with a lot of focus on healing spells once again.
As long as they make bards feel powerful in a group thats all I really care about. Though the numbers might be off, I would prefer the bard reaction to people playing normally compared to just spamming debuffs on people that take effect after people utilize them. I feel like that style of creation would suit the combat style they are going for far better.

Since I play skalds too (also adapted to 4E about a year ago, horray!) I'll ammend this to perform in all ways. There's something to be said about a properly paced war chant that brings terror to your enemies is it turns the tide to your allies' favor.
If there's one thing I "personally enforce on my own characters," bards must perform in some manner to be bards in my eye. Having done everything up to including calligraphy, I leave the method of performing up to said bard though.
What bard doesn't sing... so, in honor of the magical musician... thought I'd have a lil fun... forget about if Cryptic has the balls to make this class happen for a minute.. and just do what bards do. Hence, I reveal the reason I called my first bard Mississippee Queen... so send your kids to their rooms, as I plug my Leslie West Signature Dean guitar into my Budda amp... & set the volume to 11...

While I've never been all that interested in bards as a player, I've always liked the concept. And in any case, I am simply hoping for all the basic (not necessarily 'core', though I guess most are) classes. Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Ranger, Rogue, Fighter, Paladin, Wizard. FvS, Sorcerer, and Spirit Shaman, not QUITE as much, but I suppose it'd be okay if they were in too. Just, not going to be upset if they aren't.

Bard has neither been confirmed nor denied in launch. So technically, they are neither in nor out.
Bard will have to be in eventually, no fantasy genre is complete w/o bard. The question is when.
