Dear Basic healer companion

Dear Basic Healer Companion

Please stop running away from melee enemies without looking where you are going. I understand the maniac with the big scary mace or evil looking sword can probably murder you to death, but you really don't die. You just get knocked out. You always get back up in a few seconds anyway.

But when you back away without checking your surroundings you make it hard for me to fight. First I have to chase after the enemy so I can kill him. I usually have to break off from one foe to do that because you ALWAYS back right into another mob. Is that your mission? To aggro all of Faerun? I mean, sure, they'll hack you into being "knocked out" but then it leaves me with 2 or more mobs and no heals. I'm thinking about trading you in for a bag of potions.

Sincerely,

Your Adventurer.

(I'm not moaning, I think its kinda funny when this happens, but I do think this sometimes. I think I ended up fighting every foe on the map at once because of this) ;)

This happens (in a variety of ways) to more than just the heal comps.

It's the AI for Ranged pets, not just healers. A long long time ago, up until mod 2 or so, the old Cleric Disciple pet had the Melee AI setting by mistake. She would facetank everything which some found useful and others found annoying. I liked it because she drew a lot of aggro and I could unload on the mobs she gathered. Mobs die, fight ends, she stands up (pets didn't auto revive in combat then) and we'd go to the next fight. After the fix, she started doing what the OP describes. I had to retire the Cleric on my TR, she she went from tank to troll, pinning the mobs down to kiting them (and pulling more)

For me it adds personality and variety. The fawns didn't seem to aggro much. When not in the mood for it later in the game one can always use stones. But yeah, I can relate to the OP.

From a game mechanics perspective, it would be best if ranged companions were coded to prioritize staying close to their summoners.

It wouldn't be terrible if the companion wanted to kite close-ranged attackers if it would stay within a small radius of the player, but it's currently an issue that runaway companions can deprive their owners of buff-sharing, so ranged behavior is highly undesirable.
