I think at the end of the day it's crappy because of poor communication.
Had they made clear when they updated the MW stuff that mod12 will likely have new gear, and explained the purpose of masterwork as the "best armor that will be tradeable" and "good catch-up for helping our guildies", I think the result would be pretty similar but the reception much better.
They clearly knew that they were going to be introducing new gear in mod12 at the time the announced the MW updates. They could have added the relevant context and plan moving forward.
Would that have devalued masterworks? Probably some, but probably not all that much. People have short attention spans and blindly chase after BiS in the short term anyway.
But then when they announced new stuff for Mod 12, they could say "as we had hinted before..." and everyone would celebrate instead of feeling duped.
Mastercrafting and Mysterious Merchant made it a whole half a mod as viable. Much of that time the Mysterios Merchant was bugged and did not work as advertised.
MM is still worth it unless they put the +5% damage bonus on the 480/500 ilvl armor. IMO the real problem is that this puts us in a position where we have to hold onto relic gear for FBI for the set bonus still.
