of the 3 ranger, warlock, wizard which is best for mostly solo with a companion? and best builds for them now

I did the warlock and had healer as companion in case things got hectic. But they nerfed curse lots are complaining but that wasn't my build. I went with the perma soul puppet build so I always had 2 companions. Rerolling a healadin now.

plus 8 extra characters that I thought I was only buying 4 ended up being doubled.

Of the three classes the Control Wizard has the lowest armor class and hit points; however, it is the only class that offers players the ability to use 4 encounters.

Try all of them to level 8ish and pick the one you like best.

I personally found that of those you listed - the CW to be the most fun for me, however I have friends who swear by the HR. Most of them however play a combat or trapper HR both of which are not 100% ranged.

I play both the CW & the SW, they are both capable of good damage. For a dps CW you'll be running into mobs and freezing them up - and you have a slow run speed. The SW is a lot zippier, especially if you slot Shadow Walk.

Generally I've found the CW has better burst damage whereas the SW is more DoT but it does have some fun skills like Arms of Hadar which knock down enemies in a line and deals ok damage.

For preference I'd say it's a matter of how you like to fight. The CW is mostly close up although it usually switches to single target ranged encounters for bosses, whereas the SW is mostly ranged unless you want to dash in and drop Pillar of Power (and dash out again :p )

One bit of general advice; never delete a character, buy more slots. I deleted two of my first characters but now wish I hadn't as they've since improved a lot (GWF & HR).

my SW surpassed my CW in levels, my SW is around 21, my CW still at 11, even when they were both around the same level, my SW was doing noticeably better in the dmg department then my CW. so at what lvl, do CWs do better? I did get lucky and got i forget the actual name but rimefire golem? companion for her, which from what I see will eventually be a strong tank for her

Devoted Cleric are good range class to play. If you go the anointed champion paragon path you open up more ability that buff your stats and your groups. The other thing with a Devoted Cleric Anointed Champion is the option to increase your AC to around 35+ and you can do heals. This means Tank AC, decent HP, and self healing. The only thing you don't have is your class ability to improve your defensive stats further; however, that is not the point of a cleric. Your goal is damage and healing and Devoted Clerics do well with healing and ok as a DPS.

If you want pure damage, go with Control Wizard or Hunter Ranger.
