Training a companion unsummons your current companion

If I have one companion summoned, and another of my active companions is sent off for training, the game unsummons my current companion, forcing me to summon him again. I assume this is a holdover from pre-VIP days, when only your summoned companion could get XP. But now it's possible for unsummoned companions to level up and be sent for training quite easily.
