Cardassian Yakuma frigates pointless/lazy?

vaderan#4971 vaderan Member Posts: 15 Arc User
Greetings,

i will keep it short: currently, i am testing through various carrier setups, testing out different hangar ship loadouts. So far, on Klingon side, i am a huge fan of disruptor builds with B'Rel type hangar pets. On federation/romulan side, i made quite satisfying experience with Elite scorpion fighters and Nukara Elite widows, while Peregrines turned out somewhat unsatisfying. However, since i purchased the Cardassian Intelligence ships, the cardassian Yukara frigates turn out to be a true letdown, when it comes down to combat behaviour. I admit, i didn´t bother to buy one of the upgraded versions so far, so i am still around with the regular, blue ones.
These Yakuma frigates appear to be extremly "lazy". Where my B'Rel´s or Scorpions engage at around 15km distance to target and start unleashing hell, the Yakumas always tend to stay behind, even falling back some times for no reasons, and hardly start to engage, even at below 10km range, when targets are already inbound.

Is this some kind of bad AI? Or a feature? Even more important: does anybody have experience with the advanced/elite versions of the Yakumas? Are they better performing? I usually build my ships, carriers aswell, around one specific type of damage, like phaser or disruptor, so i usually try to equip hangar pets with identical damage types either. Where could i go on federation side for disruptor hangar pets, if not for the Yakumas? Am i correct, assuming that damage type enhancement from consoles also effects damage output on my hangar pets?

I am fairly new around these forums, and still figuring out many things about this game, so any advice and recommendation would be appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

Cheers, Vader

Some pets simply work better than others, always been an issue and probably always will be. Sometimes pets get fixed sometimes the break even more.
As for the yukawas, the advanced and elite version are a collossal waste of dil & fleet credits. While on paper raplacing 3 standard beams with dual beams would up the DPS their borked AI makes them actually worse because they pretty much never get on target with their 90° weapon arcs.

Back in the day klingon bops were ludicrously powerful. The ai for your pets was adjusted over time but all pets seem to use the same ai(?) it could be the reason why some types of class ships work better than others.

it would be nice if this whole pet ai thing got overhauled so they can be a lot more useful for when you really need them with a wider range of orders that they can follow.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

I hope they fix this pet-ai someday. Since some pets appear to perfom better than others: any specific recommendations?

In LOTRO, Pets were so aggressive that in an update earlier in this year they cut the aggro range in half. We should have those problems.

Maybe the Pilots are lazy because they want to get back to their Tailor shops and their hearts are not really into this. ;)

I am convinced that different pets use different AIs or programed to use only certain patterns & abilities that are timed/gated on top of the regular cool downs.

On paper these pets are solid... look at those abilities and it's weapons payload... yet on use, they suck.

Just as players have powerlevels... pretty sure they can define how the power is spread to the pets/npcs.

One of the main reasons I bought the ship pack was the pets... and they suck. If I had known I would not of used it as a point to justify spending my money on the ship pack.

I love the Widows, Scorpions and the Vorgon frigates.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

The Cardassian Frigates seem to be suffering from the same thing that the Vorgon onces did. Slow to engage.

Pets that don't function well when their pilot AI involves derping in random directions instead of keeping their guns on target tend to perform poorly. The more demanding the requirements are for keeping guns on target, the worse the pet will perform.

    Yukawa uses beam arrays.

    3 Fore Beam Arrays
    1 Aft Beam Array
    1 Fore Torp

So far, i never had any problem with fighter-type pets.

Frigate-types are more of a gamble... Breen Plesh Brek frigates work like a charm ; they have no problem keeping up with you and pack a punch. BaSro' frigates, on the contrary, are sluggish to a fault and rarely seem to keep up with you.

They're one of those pets that require constant monitoring, hoping recall works after each encounter and likewise hoping that they actually deploy again for the next.

The recall issue is one that seems to be down to ship design as you can see the pet trying to interact with a point within the ships hitbox/aura rather than a point just outside the model as would be a sensible approach for a game.

The dithering in combat is the ai not knowing how to behave with weapons like mines so if the player targets something before they get into range the pets aggro and start spamming them. This will trigger the alert status for both them and player even when the player is 15km away and pets further off.

That again is likely a simple fix, don't let pets aggro or trigger alert until they themselves are within the 10km range of weapons.

Meh, the pet mechanics have always been wonky. STO never gave us an actual "Carrier" like we saw in other Star Trek games (Armada, Orion Pirates, etc) as in a ship with mostly defensive weapons (well a LOT of defensive weapons) and 4, 6, or 8 hangers. Where your game play is, drop fighters and very carefully monitor them and support them.

As is now, even the carriers in game are mostly respectable ships themselves, with a few handicaps, and the fighters are just added as a (debatable) bonus damage/threat sink. I would love to actually have a hanger of heavy bombers, hanger of ECM/ECCM support vessels, and 2-6 hangers of space control light attack vessels. But no dice.

Fighters/frigates can be better or worse depending on which ones you use. But they are mostly useless. You can just sick them on an enemy and forget about them as the mechanic/AI isn't up for that.

Well, you can consider hangar-pets as a bonus, on the other hand, ARC is not ashame to sell a bunch of ships either build as carriers, or advertised with unique hangar-pets. Two of the three purchasable Cardassian ships come with these unique Yakuma Frigates, and considering the price tag, you could at least expect the product you purchase to work properly.

That sad, the standard Yakuma frigate isn´t that bad at all, once it engaged. The issue is, that they just take ages to engage at all. IF they would behave like the B'Rel hangar pets of my KDF carrier, i wouldn´t complain at all...

Ok, long story short.. the edit Monster eated my post:

    - The Yukawa are Frigates, not Figters nor raiders, they handle differently, they behave similar to the Bash'Ro, so they have to be deployed closer to the fight.
    - The behavior of Frigates depends on the location of the hangar bay, port, they react fast and engage in an instant, but when is in the aft, they must go arround your ship and only then, they enter in a "combat ready" state. You can test that by parking backwards in a CCA, so that your hangar is pointing to the CE, they will enter in combat state faster.
    - Traits, Wing Comander is great, and the Sar'Thein mastery is a must, if you have some zen, buy the Escort Carrier bundle, the coordinate strike mastery is wonderful, and those ships are great, so its a win/win
    - I have the very rare Yukawas, they handle great, the 360 beam is a lot of help (why we dont have a 360 spiral wave again?), and with the Wing Commander trait, they are quite sturdy.
The forces of darkness are upon us!

The Vorgon Frigate pets had the same problem when the Vorgon Carrier first came out.

my favorites are the BoPs, the Weavers and then the scorps. if you can get both wings of the UR scorps out, it gets fun when the wall of hyperplasma torpedoes fire. Sadly the scorps don't last very long. oh and the romulan drones are excellent too to bad they are locked to scimitars

I feel the same about the Xindi-Primate Heavy Fighters. Elite ones are frickin' awesome, but they're locked to only the Xindi carriers.
