I tried a varanus (t5, no upgrade), and even though the stats on the wiki show it to be poor compared to others at its tier, I actually had no trouble with it and found it fun. I was looking for a kdf sci ship with a bit more oomp...what's a recommended course that doesn't involve 250M EC on the exchange? I'm willing to do the c-store (and would consider a 10M ship, but those are all ugly and not sci ships).
I really want a sci ship, not a raider with sci abilities or the like.

P.S. Is the Varanus better than its stats indicate? I even forgot to deploy the repair platform and didn't have troubles.

And all Tier 6 Science Vessels seem to have 5 science consoles, so you can't really go wrong with the ship choice IMO. However, being serious about flying a Science Vessel can lead to very different decisions than when you're serious about playing a cruiser or escort. But since you already have good experience with a Science Vessel, you might be already right on track.
If you want a KLingon looking ship, your only two Tier 6 options so far however is the Naj'sov and the Qul'poH.
If you can accept Gorn ships, there is also the whole Gorn Set of ships. Being 3-Pack ships, they are fleet level at default, but of course, being a pack ship they'll either cost more than a single ship, unless you break up that pack, which you could regret later as you lose out on the pack price reduction that way.
There is also the Temporal Multi-Mission Science Vessel, which is a cross-faction ship. THat's not bad either, especially since it comes with Temporal gimmicks. It also comes with a 3-Pack, this time a cross-faction bundle containing a Raider, Dreadnought Cruiser and Science Vessel. Pretty good value pack.
The Qul'poH is an Exchange/Lockbox ship, so it might be a bit expensive. It's pretty good, though.
IMO the saddest aspect about KLingon ships is usually that you just don't have as many visual customization options. Especially not with ships like the Naj'Sov, that don't have lower tier variants nor a 3-pack bundle going for them.
10.5 is poorer than 11 (Laeosa), but not poorer than 10 (Advanced Research Vessel). And neither value is a big difference. The Multi-Mission Recon Science Vessels have a 0.5 better turn rate than the equivalent Gorn vessels, however, maybe you're thinking of them?
And quite frankly, while I think it would make sense if Cryptic would just default to cannon capability on (actual, not membership world) Klingon Science Vessels, it makes little sense to go with a cannon build on Science Vessels. Not even on the Vesta. The slots are better used for torpedoes or weapons that can complete set bonuses for those torpedoes.
I think I'm going to get an orb weaver off the exchange to tide myself over until the multi-mission pack goes on sale.
It really bugs me how statistically under-powered the varanus is compared to other ships at its level. Not worth spending an upgrade on that ship.

- d'kyr, tiny more hull
- d'kyr, 1.3 vs 1.2 shields
- Let's call the bridge officer stations a tie
- d'kyr, 45 inertia vs 40
- d'kyr, +15 aux vs +10
The d'kyr has a support craft, the varanus a repair platform. I don't know the numbers.

The problem here is you're comparing a Fed Science Ship against a KDF Science. Fed ships have higher shield modifiers than KDF, and considering you chose a Vulcan ship (Vulcans being great Scientists), you chose a bad comparison. The only comparisons you should be making are between what ships your character can actually use, and KDF can't use the D'Kyr.
The Varanus is still a decent ship, but it's a tiny part of what you need. Your equipment is the MAJOR part of your combat abilities and survivability. Focus on the consoles and abilities, not the ship if you're limited in funds.
There's nothing relative in the comparison I showed above; in every aspect the d'kyr is the same or better. Now, I didn't spend money on the varanus, but I'm not going to spend money to upgrade an inferior ship.

I actually Started with (and return to) a KDF Dyson Science Destroyer (T5U). Just remember to stick with it primarily AS a science Vessel. Switching to the Tactical mode is nice in short bursts (I do it alot) but It is a Sci vessel first and should be run that way (Plus its got a cloak)..
Right now one of my DSD's is running all Polaron with 3 mission/Rep Polaron Tac consoles to boost the Polaron Damage (secondary damage as my chief source is still Exotic Sci Abilities).
As already mentioned the Naj'Sov and the (UGLY) Gorn MMSVs..
Cross Faction Stuff is good too..T5U OrbWeaver, T5U 29C Temporal Sci Vessel, T6 Daemosh, T6 31C Eternal..
They all are fun and all will do major DPS it you build em right. Nice part about Science Vessels..You dont really need any of the specialty stuff to make em good.
