I just looked at the tooltip of dilithium under the assets tab. Maybe that's an old hat, I didn't play much in the time before season 7, but it's new to me.
"You are limited to having 10,000,000 Dilithium. If you meet or exceed the limit, you will not earn any more Dilithium until you drop below the limit."
"You are limited to having 10,000,000 Dilithium Ore. If you meet or exceed the limit, you will not earn any more Dilithium Ore until you drop below the limit."
Don't get me wrong, none of my characters will ever get that amount of dilithium, ore or otherwise, but I really wonder why someone thought such a limit was necessary?

Actually I think that was there before season 7.
Its probably just some arbitrary limit they have so you don't just stockpile the stuff.
Probably for the same reason they have a cap on EC, to prevent any one person from becoming 'God' in game and controlling the universe as we know it. Really, a 10 Million cap on Dilithium is way way way beyond anything any normal player is ever going to be able to save up in the lifetime of the game, so it's a non issue.
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.

Ops..it was before S7 went live! I thought the same...I suppose they found some hole in the code making possible some kind of exploit; so, they fixed it before we could spot it.

So they could make money when you have to buy yourself a higher limit. BTW, you can buy a 1 billion upgrade for 500 zen.
At the present exchange rate? If I had that amount of Dilithium... That would be an insane move. You'd lose almost all of it.
Better solution: Use the excess to buy a character slot or two, and transfer the rest around to the other toons, as Dilithium is a per-character currency.

You're doing it wrong. It's buy low, sell high. Now is the perfect time to sell dilithium. Plus, we're talking about a ridiculous amount of dilithium. Ten million dil is over 89k zen at current rates. I think you can afford to buy and hold at that level. This is basically a non-issue.

For that much you could have the devs touch you in a sensual manner.

You are assuming that Dilithium will ever be worth pre-season 7 values again. I stand by what I said - I think if you buy at the current price, you will regret it in 6 months time when it's near the hard-floor.
To prevent overflows. If they let any variable reach the store cap, they risk overflows, which could be disastrous. Even Zen probably has a cap, though it's not displayed.
You do realise that without buying massive amounts of Zen and selling it for Dilithium it would take you 3 1/2 years of reaching the refinement cap daily to gain that much Dilithium.

And given the massive amount of Dilithium that's been pumped into the economy through the (marks/BNP)>Dil conversion path... I think you're going to see the price of Dilithium decrease shortly. Perhaps not to 160 levels again, but definitely above 140.

Probably quicker if you speculate a lot. If you're making a lot of rapid trades on the Exchange and netting a 1% increase from them, it doesn't take long for that to mushroom. 100,000 Dilithium in your starting pot would reach 10,000,000 in just ~463trades (1.01^463 = 100.18).
multiple trades in different directions in the same Day??
How about ONE sale of Zen per day per person
One sale of dilithium per character per day
An if no one traded the speculators would leave and go to some other scam
on some other game
I don't see why it's a problem. I don't have the patience to work with the Dilithium Exchange because of the volume of trades per second, but for me a lot of the fun in the game comes from working the EC/Item Exchange. Nobody is being cheated, people are just buying and selling at a rate set by the market.
Ok a new ship comes out in a box
its worth maybe X Ec (where X is an amount a normal honest player can raise in a month)
Some go on the exchange at X +/- 10%
immediately a speculator buys them up and relists them at Xx10 or Xx30
A second speculator buys the ones at Xx10 and relists at Xx50
Answer to this is to make all these boxes Bind on pick up or account bind
Another example
You can buy saurian brandy from bartenders
when a doff chain came out that needed it suddenly some people were buying from bartenders and posting on the exchange at 100x the price (which is robbery)
they rely on the fact that some people are less well informed or less educated and can't read the guides
this is dishonourable and dishonest isn't it
Same goes for selling a white doff for a million EC
Well the same sort of people obtained a supply of zen or dilith that they never intend to use
they use this as a float to "bet" on the exchange then every now and then take some zen and convert it into something people want which they then sell (often for real money)
It's worth the price that the highest bidder will pay for it.
The whole point of the Exchange system is to extract consumer/producer surplus and arrive at optimal price points. As everything about this game falls under the "luxury" or rather "non-essential" umbrella, there are no social externalities to be concerned with.
Hard working people pay for it
Kids spend their allowance on it
Elderly ladies buy it so they can provide dilithium to their fleets so they can have a tank full of squid in the day room (and yes there is at least one fleet out there with an average age of 60)
So yes people are being hurt
then theres the poor devil working a 12 hour day grinding dilithium on 12 characters to trade for zen to trade for items to sell via his boss
there are infact people grinding dilithium for a LIVING now
twisted or what
See Im not a socialist but I have watched the greatest country in the world go to hell in a hand basket because of speculation and "markets" specifically in debts and securities
From free people who voluntarily exchange real money for a virtual currency to use in their recreational activity of choice.

No they're not. Again, nothing about this game "matters". Nobody will go hungry because the price of Zen is at its market price, because no rational person would take their luxury spending out of their essential spending (and irrational people can't be accounted for).
See Im not a socialist but I have watched the greatest country in the world go to hell in a hand basket because of speculation and "markets" specifically in debts and securities
And no not always peoples own choices
some people are being manipulated
... So your argument is that a tiny portion of people are idiots who allow themselves to be manipulated by an even tinier portion of people who are malicious? Really?
And some people are not too hard to blackmail "donate 200,000 dilith by friday or you are out of the fleet"
etc
There are lots of fleets out there who would welcome new members - even non-contributing members.
Frankly your argument is a bit weird. Anyone who fits under your categories above has bigger problems to worry about than the price of Dilithium being a few percent higher or lower in certain circumstances. Such as not being able to function, socially.
We all know what country you were refering to, Trollvax.
Only in McDonaldsland would someone take "socialist" as an insult, especially someone spouting (a caricature of) socialist ideals; only in McDonaldsland (and France) are people so arrogant to call their country "the greatest in the world".
He was feigning misunderstanding. It's a joke thing. It flew right past you, as those tend to do.
Just so you guys know, if you started refining the maximum amount of dilithium right now and took full advantage of the veteran doff assignment, it would still take you 3.2 years to refine 10 million dilithium. Keeping in mind that the Dilithium system was only introduced a year ago. To buy that much dilithium, assuming you bought at roughly 200 dil/zen, it would cost you over $50,000. I'm guessing no one is anywhere near that cap.

Not for dil. The cap increase is for EC.
ROLL TIDE ROLL

it might slow down the corruption of the system
Then nobody would trade, because there's no reliable way to differentiate a "speculator" from a regular player.

The Great Evil of the era infact
In the real world the reason a drug that costs 15 pence to make costs ?16 a dose
The reason millions live in poverty
An item has a listed value
its Worth that
If you charge 10% more you are making a profit
if you charge 200% of that you are a frengi
We're playing a game. Nobody is materially harmed by free market running here.
