Actually, I always kept my levelling boffs (though I think I never had a white one). They helped me when times were rough, now when I have everything they got a sweet job onboard the ship and may even get to sit on the bridge or come outside with me. I think it's only fair not to drop them.

That is more an effect of the changes in Boff skills and how they are trained now. So there is much less need to sell the Boffs themselves. Even for skills not at the Boff skill vendor, the ones you can get from Boffs will usually be mulched out of the Boff before sale (TS3 for example).

Of course that is one aspect. But it can't be the only one, since even compared to a couple months ago the supply seems to have dropped. (Prices as well)
the lower the asking price the less likely people are to bother listing them.

But I bet if you go onto Zone Chat in Sector Space, or even *shudder* Earth Spacedock and asked, you'd have a dozen people lining up to give you one for free, if you're a lowbie.

At the ranks you need a BOff just to fill a seat the fact of color is not really important. What is more important is the Abilities they bring. Boarding Party and Eject Warp Plasma are very different abilities, for example. So be sure to ask "What's his/her Abilities?

And don't hesitate to buy dozens of manuals at the boff sill vendor and experiment with different skills.

And if your Character is fairly new, keep your eye on your Expertise Pool. My Discovery Character had about 750k Expertise and I started applying Specializations to my Boffs. Before I knew it I was down to 45k. Specializations use up a considerable number of Expertise to apply.

For older Characters with millions of Expertise, no problem. For new Characters, be mindful.

Also, be mindful that Space Specialization is useless unless you have a ship with a Specialist seat.

In my opinion, Specialist BOffs are end-game assets only. I would advise not spending anything on creating them, unless you already know your end-game build.

As a counter-point, Spec powers on boffs are absolutely usable on ground and quite useful. Also you can add as many new powers as you want.

And you can have an end game Character that is fairly new, hence fewer Expertise Points.

You know with these new Scaling ships it could be possible for Specialist Boffs to use their lower level Specialization powers from the right seat. What do you think?

I'm not saying 'don't do it.' I'm all in favor of experimenting and diversifying early to see what works. Investment in Specialization is expensive, comparatively, so I would say choose wisely.

If you've plunked down the cash for a ship with a functional Specialist Seat, then by all means, use it. See what you can do with it. But avoid spending points on specializations you can't use because you may want that Expertise for other things.

Well, would be easier with those Boffs that you can get that already have a Specialization 'built in'.
