frustrating-est game on ice

kronbrandtkronbrandt Member Posts: 12 Arc User
edited December 2017 in The Academy
After taking into account what I read here and in rattle's tips thread (link in first answer by casualsto, thanks!) I managed to figure it out. To make it succinct:
Idiot's guide to the frustrating-est race on ice:
- start by looking in the right direction and press run buttons while still rooted (there is a lag of sorts there before the game accepts the command after "starting" the race) - this will give You a headstart, especially as the first part is a pretty straight run.
- try to avoid the snow unless You want to break - it slows You down noticeably
- to stop and reorientate jump >without pressing any direction<. You will still move a full jump length by "inertia", then stop when hitting ground. Try changing direction mid-flight for the next corner. (instant recovery after land, unlike rolling)
- You can cut corners and overshoot a little (maybe half a jump length off the markers) but try not to as snow-stepping eats up time. Only cut corners where it actually saves time.
- the evil snowmen are >not< part of the race. Don't race while they are around.
- if nothing else helps, run off the track immediately, fail, and restart till You have no competitor.
- equipment and Q-forms have no noticeable effect on the slide mechanic. Q-forms are sometimes smaller and thus easier to keep on track.

Original Post:

Greetings,

like everyone I'd like to get my Christmas ship, like, it seems, many others (as it is even mentioned in the wiki...) I am too stupid to do the friggin' race. Please help me.

While I got better at navigating the course with some practice I am totally unable to outrace the competitors (So far mainly spiders, one furry thing, a fat breen and a skinny breen...). The statement on the wiki that my normal, non-run "jog" is faster than their movement is plain wrong. Don't know what kind of buffs people are using, but as they are mentioned seperately I was assuming a normal, non-winterlympics-trained toon could do it without special equipment... but I have to run, and even doing so I can barely keep up. What's the trick? Walking backwards? (I already manage to slide the corners running well enough, stay out of the snow, mostly, cut corners I am allowed to cut and have tried getting a Q transformation. Still too slow.) Compared to the other events of this sort this one seems rediculously hard (as in an actual challenge...) - so where's my mistake? Special event shoes mandatory?

Nothing is needed to run this race but a mouse. Really if you do it with the keyboard its a bit harder, but using a mouse you run the thing full pelt while watching TV. The whole trick is you take the ice into account by turning into the corner before you get to the corner and aim for the snowy bits as well as you can use them for traction.

Many of us here have been doing this for so long we do it on auto pilot pretty much, but unless you can learn to take the slipperiness of ice into account you wont do well at this one.

Looking at your OP you are hindering yourself as well by keeping away from the snow as you can cross some bits of snow without penalty and in many cases it is best to do so.

Stop running short of them and slide around the corner.
Double click to roll for better time.
Jump for and even better time. This one takes practice as u need to take your fingers off the movement keys when u do it.
You can also cut some points of the track(it's not as strict as the pvp race) and run round some at full pelt.
With a bit of practice you can try and beat the npc that spawn with the player starts b4 u.
If all else fails eventually u'll get no opponent.

the winter boots won't make much of a dif as they give u aprox the same effect as running on the ice.

Whenever you start to slide, just double tap forward to do a roll and recover.

Honestly, this is the only 'trick' I ever need. Makes the race impossible to fail. Just run normally like the NPC isn't even there and when you start to lose control, double tap into a roll and start running again.

You'll be surprised at just how easy it becomes.

    Good luck! :)

Actually got it now. Think I did not pay attention to the snow-down effect enough and was overtaken constantly because of it. Also the jump-stop thing needs a bit of getting used to. Think this thread might still not be obsolete as a reference for other frustrated racers (stopped last year because every time I tried there was a snowman invasion and I thought that was part of the race...) who come looking for advice in the academy first. Thanks everyone for replying so quickly!

I’m happy to hear you got it down.

It’s the same every year too, so once you have it down.. you’re set year after year. :)

A friend of mine commented that Caitians and Ferasans seem to have better traction on the ice than other races. Don't know the truth of this, but he does do better on the track with his cats than with other races. Might be worth looking into.

    Things I want in STO:

    1) More character customization options such as more clothing options, letting the toon complexion affect the entire body, not just the head. Also a true RGB color picker applied to all costume and appearance options, which would allow for true appearance customization and homogenous colors instead of "this same exact color looks vastly different on two different pieces."
    2) Bridge customization, not bridge packs. Let us pick a general layout and adjust the color palette, console appearance, and chair types, as well as more ready room layout options.
    3) Customizable ground weapons, i.e. The aesthetic look of phaser dual pistols but they shoot antiproton bolts. For obvious reasons this would only apply to standard ground weapons.
    4) For the love of Q please revamp Plasma Ground Weapons. They look like demented Supersoakers right now.
    5) True Vanity Impulse and Deflector effects similar to Vanity Shields.
    6) A greater payout for hitting T6 Reputations. Currently it takes more time and resources to get from T5 to T6 than it does to get from nothing to T5. Make that grind really pay out at the end.
    7) Mirrorverse Refugee event similar to AoY/Delta/Gamma, complete with new Mirrorverse recruits for all factions.
    8) Independent Faction, because yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me!

If you attempt to race during a snowman battle and have an opponent, you are "protected" wherever you are on the track and therefore will NOT be able to engage snowmen, or be engaged by them.

This protection is not extended to you if you attempt to race without an NPC opponent, because it's "untimed" you are given full freedom to engage the snowmen, etc., but are still bound by the restriction of staying on track...

Tips, shmips! Last year I tried and failed repeatedly to master racing on the ice, and yet gave it another shot yesterday. I simply do not have what it takes, so the Breen ship will not be added to my holdings. Alas. High blood pressure events test the mettle of my medication, so I have to admit that a man has to acknowledge his limitations.

This is the big one - you can 'run' just fine and do a roll anytime you need to change direction.

    Step 1: Ignore NPC
Step 2: Run in straight lines
Step 3: Jump just prior to each curve
Step 4: Turn while mid jump
Step 5: Let off throttle mid jump
Step 6: Repeat in straight lines until finish.

You can beat the NPC just doing straight lines. The competitive race requires drifting and other skills.

Just keep disqualifying yourself till you have no opponent then you can walk the whole race.

While I do now drift a lot of it, the first year I did it i ran straight lines where possible and did the jump trick any time I needed to go around a corner. Just before reaching a turn, just quit running and jump. When you land you will be at a dead stop. Then you just Walk any remaining turn as needed and resume running. Rinse and repeat until the finish line.
Your NPC opponent will be quite close behind you and might actually briefly pass you a few times but you should win. A bit more practice and you will be able to time your jump and make your turn in mid air so you are ready to run in the new direction as soon as you land. The key is that you must quit running before you land, and not resume running until you touch down. If you have a movement key pressed at the moment of landing you will just slide, negating the instant stop effect of the jump, only now you are even closer to the boundary than before.

As others have mentioned, you can practice the race any time you like as the track is always there. It took me a number of tries to finally get it down, but once I did, it's now second nature. I regularly pass the opponent of the person ahead of me now.
    LTS and loving it.

I'm no super-player with cat like reflexes... the race course isn't that bad that you need extensive notes to do it! If you get in trouble, do a roll... that kills all inertia so you don't slide off the track. Then just start walking/running as usual again.

To me, the worst part is where the pop-up comes saying "They're entering the final stretch!" when you are only half way done! Half the course is not the 'final stretch'!!! And it's been saying that for years!!!! :# Come on, Cryptic!

the funny thing is that it would fit in character for Q to call the second of half of the race the "final stretch" just to mess with you.

The bunny hop and roll strats are ones I see repeated often, so they must work for folks, but personally I prefer drifting without stopping. It takes more practice, but it feels more reliable and controllable than hopping and rolling for me, and thus far has netted me pretty consistent 1st and 2nd place runs barring the unfortunate mistimed turn or the dice-roll that is the big jump partway through the race...

...Seriously, this game's input lag is just so that it's a 50/50 shot, with the exact same timing, that I'll either clear the pit or backslide straight in. It's recoverable, but anyone with a clean run will get ahead of you. Gotta hope one of those ice barriers throws them off or they misjudge a turn.

Pretty sure this is for the 'other' race to get Q tokens and not the PvP one to get Eppoh tags.

Buy a cheap gun with the run mod for 15% extra speed and click the trait that increases run speed by 5%, this makes going fast on the straights and walking the tight bits viable. The run mod gun can also be helpful for getting around dyson.

Too bad Motion Accelerator doesn't work in the WW. That, combined with Frost Boots, good gear, good traits, and good reflexes would make your speed insane.

I agree. This race is as un-fun as anything I have encountered so far in STO - and that's saying alot.
I'm not going to get the stupid Breen ship, either.

Thanks to everyone who posted tips! I fared much better this year and got the event ship yesterday on both my main and alt, so yay for me. Now to equip that ship with all of the Breen equipment and that warp core and see what she's got under the hood, so to speak?

I should be able to get the ship tonight.

And from now until the event ends I can run the race on any character to collect 40 marks of my choice... I will probably only do this for the two characters I created in 2017 though.
