• I've seen the game do this before. The mouse was tracking a different spot than where it was on the screen. If this was the case for you, it should be apparent on every screen and window. Restarting the game solved the issue for me.

• I just tried this and it worked. You have to fly against the southeastern corner, and also fly.. uh.. well there's 3 dimensions, if southeast covers 2, down is for the 3rd. If that makes sense.
