Vivox Voice chat integration design ideas

Voice chat with other players can be something great to look forward or a major pain.

There is a racing game I bought recently where you can't turn voice chat off, so at any time you can be running around in your car and hear kids shouting in foreign languages. Guess I dont need to tell you that after a few minutes you want to throw the speakers out the window.

To prevent that, I'm making a short list of features that STO's voice chat integration should have before release.

1.- Ability to choose a default subset of people you want to hear by default when you are in a zone.
Some options could be:
  • Everyone
  • Only fleet members
  • Only people in your friendslist
  • Only people in your team
You should also be able to choose several of those (for example, friends + team).

2.- A list of people that you would never want to hear. This is a voice chat ignorelist.

3.- An easy way to turn on and off all voice chat sound. This would be an easy to remember combo of keys (for example CTRL+S) and/or a small icon in your UI. That way, if you are going to listen to game voiceover or immediately want some peace you can turn it off fast and get it back on just as easily. If someone tries to talk to you while you have the system off, you should still be able to notice by looking to your UI.

Other ideas are welcome ;)

I would hope that they're not going to be so silly as to put in fully ambient voice or link voice to zone/local channels.

Me too. But at the same time, I wouldn't have expected it from that other game.
I just don't want to risk it, and at the same time its also an opportunity to give some more ideas ;)
