Honestly this ought to be easy for Cryptic to do since this was minimal in the Canon Series...
Could we get some serious firepower?
Talking your RPGs, SAMs, Mortars, Heavy Rapid Fire Machine Guns, Recoilless Rifle Beam equivalents, etc.
You kind of started it with the last FE - Got that fighter you can shoot down - but would like Lob a nice Sam right up its afterburner. Interoduction of this and other similar items would add some new fun in the ground combat (plus make you smell up your pants when you see a 'tank' rolling towards your character).
Not sayign this should not come with some disadvantages. Simple oneso n the top of my head I can think of is a 'pack out' / 'pack up' time delay as it takes time to set up the heavier equipment. In doing so, not only is it an exploitable attack on the person, but takes 1 char out of action to manage it.
Just seeing small arms and saying "okay that is it" just seems 'fake'. Of course, I also agrued a thousand times on Fleet chat with my Fleetmates why I couldn't just orbital strike the rom base to rumble in Chatper 5....
We do have Mortors and the closest we got to machine guns is rapid-fire rifles.
But we do need missile launchers (Worf used one in Insurrection).
I am talking the real stuff... not these grenade lobbing things your engineer makes.
No I want the Mortar / artillery where you hear the Klingons cursing you and shouting "Incoming" right before they are red misted and a crater is all that remains of their honor...

Oh stuff that actually shoots from a distance? Yeah, that would be nice. But too bad everything has to be done in a 30m radius. Be great to have actual sniper rifles (not rifles that pretends to be sniper rifles).

I'm trying to remember which episodes had Tanks, ...
I remember a submachine gun in First Contact...
...there was that stupid dunebuggy in Nemesis...
Worf had some kind of shoulder launched missle in Insurrection...
The Gorn used some kind of Energy Mortar in Arena...
There was that Big-Momma Laser/Phaser Gun powered from the Enterprise, in The Cage...
I'd love a photon grenade launcher, especially if it had a grenade barrage secondary attack. Maybe a plasma flame thrower for the KDF. Disposable LAW-style rockets would be awesome (treat them like devices, limited to a stack of 5).

Good thread idea.

Thanks - Kind of was thinking "Why the heck am I using this pea shooter on a fighter?" in Chapter 5 of the last FE.
The other aspect I had for this was fortifications and destoryable background - would allow for the use of cover and arc firing of weapons. While someone else said it in that you did not really see this in the TV series, I cannot see how in a planetary invasion some empire would send 1000 troops and they could somehow conquer and hold a planet. Of course, is the planet has no spine and can't realize you outnumber the enemy 10,000 to 1 or something and rise up - well they deserve to get conquered
To me it would be an area Cryptic could do whatever they really felt like in design without having a bunch of Canon TRIBBLE hammer them on the look and feel of a vehicle or fighter.
Champions Online has some destructable environment pieces (cars, lightpoles, etc) so the capability is there for STO. Having some of those crates and barrels that litter ground exploration missions contain volatile chemicals or items would make things interesting, especially if you could use high density rifles to push them towards an enemy before they explode.
I'm hoping the ground combat revamp ditches the 'stand in the open and shoot each other until someone dies' theme that STO ground action currently has. I doubt it will bring cover mechanics into the mix, however.
Ds9 had artillery even tho we never saw the actual battery's we saw there
Effect, when Nog lost his leg , that episode also had phase shifting anti-personal
Mines, then again episode when Jake Sisko gets lost in battle field of
Klingons when he went on aid mission with Basshir.
there's no point to tanks, theyre just giant targets.... we're using disintegration pistols Ffs. :P
it would actually be amusing to have an episode where someone tries to use a tank and your starship just blows it up. Or maybe an exploration race that uses tanks and you blow them up with your hand weapons.
the fact that it takes so many shots to kill things is because its an MMO
it's true that worf's energy bazooka thing is canon and should probably be included
Umm...like i just said..the fact that it takes so many shots to kill things is because its an MMO
in terms of star trek fiction even a hand phaser can kibosh pretty much anything. one of the recent episodes even proved this - you can actually kill a Scorpion fighter with hand weapons.
and anything big enough to be a threat - like the scorpion fighter, or a tank - can be easily detected and destroyed from orbit by starships. Again, as shown in the recent episode.
so... the only time a tank would be even theoretically useful is for when you control orbit and fear no starships. In other words it would only be useful for purposes of conquest! Starfleet, at least, would never build such a vehicle, and if they ever needed something like it, they'd just use a shuttle.
For tanks, they could have avoidance systems that allowed them to avoid the ship based phaser blast. After all, even in the FE, your char was calling in the coordinates...
Just saying Crpytic could have fun with the concept. Make it "Star Trekish" in feel and nature and would allow for something new to blast on the ground. Personally I envisioned a 'tank' to be nothing than a low flying heavily armored shuttle craft with some heavy weapons.

How many shots does it take to get to the center of a Klingon Swordmaster with that nifty disintegration pistol? More than one. Sometimes, a lot more.
It's a good bet that a tank in 2409 would have shields. Just sayin'.
