Over the many years i ahve watched trek it has become readily apparent that huge amounts of the Klingon Defense fleets appear to be built and maintained by the diffrent houses. This in and of itself would be a massive undertaking. not to mention expensive in some form or another for any perticular family.
I could easly see that during times of war klingon captains trying to actually capture an enemy ship to return with his "Prize" to present to the head of the family. I could also see a Klingon captain doing something very much like Kruge in Trek 3 and "transfering his flag" to the newly aquired ship.
Anyway the idea i had was for a teri 3 level mission where a KDF Captain could attempt to capture a federation ship and if successful it would open up 1 of the teir 3 ships up to him to use. For example it would open up a plain jane Cheyenne class to him. when he completes the mission he gets his choice of ship but only that ship.
anyway i dont know what others may think of this but i thought i would throw it out there and get some feed back.
On a side note i see this as only KDF mission it is definaly not a thing the federation would do i think.
I like the idea but I doubt it will be put in. I love games like Saints Row or GTA...where you can decide if you are going to be good or bad. In STO you are really only good from your factions standpoint.
I'd love to see Cryptic allow us to choose our own path...being a good starfleet officer or maybe going rogue and being a pirate. Making bad choices in a mission I would love to see have an effect on you in the larger game. Personalize it...i realize this is star trek but you still have bad and good captains...Captain Picard (good) vs. Captain Maxwell (USS Phoenix, went rogue and attacked every Cardassian ship he could).
I'd just really like to see more personalization where your actions affect at least your gameplay.
I like the style of mission, but not the reward. Simply because (and i know ima get flamed for this) the Feds wont have the same oppurtunity.
I know, I know, Klingons dont have that many Ships as it is, and Feds have All So Much already. But Id be ****ed to see Klingon space be over run by Cheyennes and Novas....etc etc.
My twist to your idea would be to give a reward that would signify you had captured an enemy vessel...Without turning KDF space into a Pirates Cove so to speak of Federation Ships. Maybe some form of Federation Technology like a Federation Standard Issue Split Beam rifle that looked like a standard rifle but was blue or purple and hit harder then the typical phaser rifle.
And for every mission successfully completed with a ship captured for KDF scientists and engineers to reverse engineer...the closer you get to a larger reward that unlocks once you have all the pieces to produce it.
I think that there should be a "boarding party" mission for both sides. There are many good reasons for wanting to capture an enemy vessel intact rather than simply blowing it up. Even if your captain doesn't keep the ship, I'm sure your faction's brass would put it to good use. I also think this kind of mission would be a great component of a territory control system (if and when it comes to pass).
It doesn't really work from a "canon" viewpoint OR a gameplay viewpoint, as cool as it might be:
In the Trek verse, and especially in Starfleet, the computer systems are so integrated into the ship that its virtually impossible for them to be captured and taken control of. On-screen canon dictates that critical systems are voice-command authorized, and in the written universe they go so far as to have the ship lock down all systems, release sleep-gas to put out all intruders, and return at warp to the nearest starbase to allow itself to be recovered i f certain safety measured are triggered.
Gameplay wise: One of the basic rules of PVP is having a "recognition" system where you can recognize friend or foe, ship type, etc by their basic shape or silhouette. Having ships "jump sides" would confuse the matter, and I think its probably a rule they won't break.
Not to mention how complicated it would be to make everything worth right.

I actually think it's kind of neat; BUT, as w enever saw 'prizes' being flown in the TV series or Films, maybe modify it so that the ship could be broken down for component resources - and that's one way Player Fleets (large or small amongst all STO factions, including ones added as STO goes forward) get resources for building Player Starbases (they have said they want to add the ability for Fleets large and small to constuct their own bases.)

And the fact that your ship could loiter long enough to secure the enemy ship and arrange for its recovery and scrapping indicates that your faction (or perhaps even more specifically, your fleet) has "control" over a certain amount of territory. I'm warming up to this concept even more...

Well there are a lot of examples through out history. The Germans used a lot of captured equipment. As for the its untrek. PAH if it was kruge would not have tried twice to capture a ship.
As for the knock out gas. Send your boarding parties over with filter masks. As for the computer. Well take her in tow. Then when in drydock rip out her computers and put in your own. Has to be cheaper than building a brand new ship. Even if she where to be converted to a troop transport and nothing else.

I could also see a Klingon captain doing something very much like Kruge in Trek 3 and "transfering his flag" to the newly aquired ship.
Kruge "transfering his flag" to the "new" ship in Trek 3 wasn't so much using the new captured ship against his foes as it was gaining critical information from her; he even states as such. There was, to my understanding, no plan to completely abandon his Bird of Prey to crew the Enterprise; he still had two crew on the Genesis planet, plus Maltz on his ship. My guess is he could have flown his ship back to friendly space with even that minimal crew while his second followed in the Enterprise (which, at least according to Scotty, had been wired to be flown "by two trainees and a chimpanzee"). Provided, of course, Kruge didn't just beam his crew, plus the Kirk and his group, over to his ship and take the Enterprise in tow. Not that Kirk gave him the chance, of course.
While there does seem historical precedence for using an enemy craft in a fight, in both the Star Trek Universe, and in real life, it's more common to take captured enemy equipment back to a secure location and study it. This is generally what happened in the Cold War, when both Russian and American forces that managed to get their hands on the opposite side's planes or ships did; they took it to a base where they could study it (and, in at least once case, reverse engineer the aircraft). It's also what Tomalak threatened to do to the Enterprise-D in "The Defector" (TNG).
Germans using captured Mustangs in WWII strikes me as more as desperation than anything else; they were being squeezed in on two sides by that point.
Most likely those captured vessel would not be put into direct service to the Empire (unless we use one to sneak behind the feds supply lines) but would be broken down for their resources and technology instead to construct new KDF vessels.
On a personal note I disagree with the concept as it erodes faction individaulity.
What would be better would be ship trophies you can put on your crew deck.
"See that trophy? Klingon High Command gave me that after I brought in that Starfleet Galaxy-class."
What Klingons REALLY need though are captives they can put in their brig. Then KDF captains can go down there and taunt them from time to time. Now THAT would be a trophy!
I think a full blown ship capture system for the klinks would be awesome or anything similar and it would be very in character for them.
One of the best parts of PotBS was the ability to board and capture ships.
However if Cryptic ever did Implement such a system it should be dammed hard any starfleet captain worth his pips will scuttle his ship before letting an enemy capture it.
I'd like to see a couple of 'captured' ship options - not every single ship but one to three selected ships from each side being available to the other - possibly with some built in 'disadvantage' to add flavour.
After all there were two Star Trek movies where Kirk and the gang were onboard a captured Bird of Prey - why not have something similar here?
There could be a mission where we are given a caputred ship to complete that misison and we lose it after the mission. Like when the DS9 crew flew the Jem Haddar attack ship t odestro ythe ketricel white facility.

Okay, now I'm all for that idea. I just don't think we should be able to keep it.
A Ground PvP idea. It would work like the challenge system. The KDF captain can challenge the Fed player to a Capture PvP. The KDF player starts at either the Shuttle bay or Cargo Hold. He needs to make way to the Bridge. The Fed captain starts on the Bridge and needs to make way to the Engineering room. If the Fad gets to the Eng room first, the ship is scuttled. If the KDF captain gets to the Bridge first, the ship is captured. Each has to engage NPCs along the way that are fighting each other. Each captain can and must impede the others progress.
What if The factional "reward" is captured tech from the ship? Like something similar to the Reman shield...a shield that is slightly better than a Capx2 that gives your ship/nacelles a "red" hue (if playing Fed) and a "blue" hue (if playing klink)....

Well, one thing though. I realize this is just an example, but in Tier 3, why would you want a sluggish cheyenne class feddie cruiser when you already have the FAST, MANEUVERABLE, ICONIC K'tinga?
Mind you, the K'tinga at that tier DOES have:
1. 4 forward facing weapon slots
2. The ability to put heavy cannons into those weapon slots :D:D:D
