In the next day or so I'm coming in to some spare money and debating whether or not to just bite the bullet and just buy the lifetime subscription.
I know you get the exclusive stuff like the liberated borg and the badge.
But ultimately with the rumors of the game going free to play is it worth the investment now?
if you like the game and think you will get 1 1/2 years of play out of it, go for it.
Also, F2p isn't real. No game really goes f2p. You have to pay for something. Lifers don't.
And if it goes F2p it won't be for quite a while. (like after the next st movie that is 1 1/2 years away).
Besides, even if the game adopts a free-to-play model similar to Champions Online, you'll still be recieving $5 worth of Cryptic Points every month for as long as the game is active, so you're basically getting all the C-Store content for free over time.
first off there is no guarantee they will take it free to play. there are many factors to consider and even if they do i dont think it will be for a while. i personally dont think we will see free to play in 2011, so chances are even if it goes you can still get a sizeable chunk of your monies worth.
now if it does go f2p there are other things to consider. taking the CO model, the people who play for free will get a very restricted game. for example they may have to pay to unlock the featured episode series. they will have limited character slots, or be restricted in what ships they can use etc etc. so whilst they get the game for free they dont get everything we have now. paying a sub or being a lifer means you get everything you have now. if you're the sort of person that wants to have everything then chances are you will still want to pay a sub. if your not that bothered then perhaps waiting would not be a bad idea.
also like co they have said they will also give 400 free atari points each month to spend on the c-store for those people who pay a sub or are lifers, so you would actually be better off than you are now. plus you get the borg, badge, title etc.
its up to you how much you intend to play but i personally i would still be quite happy to do it.

If you enjoy the game now, you'll be getting full access (which free users won't) plus $5 of Atari Tokens each month for the rest of the game's lifespan should the game ever go free-to-play. It may, it may not.
However, if you're on the fence due to concerns over whether the game will improve dramatically, wait until after Season 4 and plans start forming for what endgame entails. It'll also mean whether the Ground Combat changes are something you'll enjoy.
At the bottom, it says there's a "stipend" of 400 atari tokens each month for subscribers and lifers. There's no word on if STO will f2p/hybrid model but it's likely they'd adopt Champs' practices if they did.
Again, I might wait until later in the year (possibly even taking a break until a new series or Season 4 launch).

I never checked the Champions website, so didn't know they restricted content.
So looks like I'll be starting a new liberated borg toon in the next few days
Here's the skinny on Champions' f2p conversion:
