Ship and Character injuries

Wouldn't it be cool if there was visual damage to you're ship? Like a Hull Fracture showing a gash on the ship exposing compartments, and gets bigger as they stack. Then with character injuries, a broken bone causes your character to limp?

Would look cool no?

not bad "idea" if i was you make the same thread in there "idea" section :p
you can add some extra's like

    Ship damaged animations:
    - flickering shields
    - random engine stalls (makes you stop moving)
    - malfunction in weapons (make beam flicker wen you shoot it, with power-downish sound and all :p )

    Great idea.

It would instill some continuity to your gameplay, especially if you're playing a weekly series. It would be very interesting to begin a new episode whilst still carrying the battle scars from your previous encounter with the latest bad guys.

Any visual damage would have to physically impede your gameplay to an extent where you will have to limp back to a starbase to get fixed, otherwise you will end up seeing ships all over the game with holes in/bits missing just because they think it "looks cool."

Having had a good think about it, I'd like to put forward some ideas:

    - Warp core damage; attempting to go to warp with a damaged core gives you say, a 20% chance of failing the transition into faster-than-light speed (would have to be based on rolls I suppose.) The penalty could be a two minute cool-down period until such time you can try again, or downtime to repair it yourself (a warp-core repair mini-game would be very welcome!) Also when at warp, your maximum speed could be severely reduced depending on the damage, so you will have to travel at warp 6 back to the nearest starbase. Exterior visual effects could be flickering nacelles or an unhealthy vapour trail. Similar effects could be applied to impulse engines.

    - Deflector damage; could impede your ability to protect yourself from space dust/debris while at warp, causing damage whilst at faster-than-light speed. The effect could be passive until you get it fixed. Exterior effects could be a flickering deflector dish, shield ripples, minor impacts on your hull from debris.

    - Weapons damage; phasers fire at reduced power levels, or simply fail to fire. Visual effects could be a "spluttering" effect of the beam weapons, or just a dimmer beam due to the power vacuum. Torpedo launchers could jam or cause torpedoes to detonate in their tubes or too close to your ship. I would love to see weapons miss their targets too, perhaps because of weapon systems damage.

    - Exterior hull damage; burns, abrasions, and gaping big holes in the hull would be very cool. Visual effects could be fire, escaping gases and the ripple of force fields as they eclipse the hull breaches. Hell I'd even vote for the odd severing of a nacelle! Imagine having to crawl back to spacedock on only one nacelle! Or have both of them blown off and have to call for rescue?!?

    - Interior hull damage; if you don't bother to fix your ship, perhaps your bridge and other interiors can show damage too? Exploded consoles, collapsed ceilings, red alert lights twinkling, engineering crews frantically working on damaged doors, medics seeing to the dead and dying?

I think any change in the damage system would have to arrive with a revision of the death penalty and the introduction of ship resources you could use to "patch" yourself up (much like using up your spare wheel; it will get you home, but you will have to get it fixed properly at some point.) I would also expect to see a balancing of the damage levels you receive; perhaps only when your hull is at 10% you have a chance of receiving such damage. I would love to be able to walk around my ship and repair it from the inside too, ie, travel to your warp core and use your engineering skills to patch it up for the journey home.

I think it would be awesome. When I did "The Doomsday Device" I finished, but I had something like 12% hull left. My ship looked NX-01 when they were in the expanse. I got a screenshot just in time. For me the ships seem to instantly repair at the end of an encounter. It would have been better if it would have stayed that way for awhile. Especially for RP.
