Anyone up for a bit of collision damage?

So I think some light penalty for colliding with npcs, other players and scenary is in order. Why? Well because I think it would make space combat more tactical and more Trek. Right now the course of a starship when in batlte is all about weapons facings relative to oponent's weakness and no-one gives a hoot if they crash headlong into anyone else - this is a tad silly.

How could this be implemented? Nothing too heavy, collision = shield's ofline for a couple of seconds while they compensate for the massive kinetic hit (either all shield facings or just the one that hit the obstacle if the specific facing is too difficult to programme - but most importantly keep the penalty for hitting someone or something SIMPLE, DIRECT, NOT OVERWEALMING but MEANINGFUL). There is good Trek precident for this, most recently in Nemisis where a good chunk of broken warbird strikes Enterprise and wipes out an entire shield facing.

I do not know what the thinking is behind no collision damage currently, whether it is part of a deliberate game mechanic or if it's a tech/dev time issue? However it does feel like a pretty serious omission.

I think it would also put some spice in missions where you are flying through an asteroid field to collect data samples, scan ships, beam down to planets or bases.

I'm all for a bit of collision damage!!

This is true as right now you head into any asteroid field at full impulse and damned be the consequences - I am up for anything that forces me to THINK about what I am doing a little more.

As long as it's an option it would be ok. I have no interest in collision damage.

I think I read that there was collision damage early in the closed beta, but they turned it off because it was an incredible hassle.

heck i would go even harder !! make em deadly "i mean it no joke" if you would crash into someone or lets say planet or other space body you would not live and talk about it!

then again it would become a great weapon of self destruction to take out an enemy with one blow ... so there has to be some sort of "ship mass" rule.
so that lets say smaller mass ships can't take out a bigger mass ship but cripples them.

You have obviously never played a game where collisions do serious damage. It's the ultimate griefer's rampage. Then you have all the NPC space trash that tries to joust with you constantly; ridiculous amount of debris in most scenarios; not to mention the totally out of control spam in PvP; plus the terrible flight mechanics of space combat . . . all adds up to an incredibly bad idea with the game as it stands.

But then you also have the enemy players and NPC's who hide inside an asteroid or the wreckage of a ship or station so they can shoot you but you can't shoot them. I've been in PvP maps where my opponents have hidden themselves inside the wreckage in the Capture and Hold space map so that they can unload everything on you but you can not even target them. That is just not right at all, so I'd have to agree with this thread. Give damage if you run into an asteroid or debris. Have it so that first your shields drain then you start to receive hull damage if you hide in them. With other stuff they can have it that the ships deflectors protect us from any damage, which is what they do.

I specifically said the penatly for hitting something should be "SIMPLE, DIRECT and NOT OVERWEALMING" just enough to register but not enough to change the course of the game.

If collision damage was linked to the difficulty slider, and done sensibly considering all the debris that can pile up, then I'd be all for it. I always feel a bit guilty when I get lazy and "bounce" off asteroids rather than dodge them. It'd be bad in PvP, methinks, cuz Cruisers would just fly though everyone and blow them up, like before Ramming Speed was nerfed. Oh, how I do so miss destroying an entire wing of frigates with a burst of Ramming Speed in my Cruiser. :p

Ok this has been one of my biggest gripes with the game so far - the ability to fly your ship into anything without so much as a scratch.

Collision damage should be implemented for ALL difficulty levels. Degrees of damage would depend on speed and shield strength, and also the size of the object you are hitting. After all, a head on collision with a starbase will utterly ruin your day but you will probably be ok hitting a fighter or shuttle.

So a ship travelling slow with full shields would get low damage if it hit something and perhaps overload your shields. With low shields you would take moderate to heavy hull damage. But full impulse into an asteroid would destroy you.

Not every impact will destroy your ship - the U.S.S Enterprise E was bit by a flying Romulan Nacelle in Star Trek Nemesis and the shields held (just). But adding a bit of realism would be do wonders for the game.
