I may get flamed for this :S

I just played Star Trek: Bridge Commander for the first time and I expect this has been said before but it would be sooo cool if space combat was like that in STO. I expect to get flamed because people who wish in vain for combat like that seem to get told to just go and play BC then. However it would be cool to have an the MMO universe and the stuff you fine in STO to be part of that :)

Sorry to be boring if you've seen this all before :(

Yes, it has been said MANY times before. And it has also been said that it is very unlikely to ever happen. Space Combat in STO is just fine for me though. I prefer the situatational awareness that is in STO space combat.

If you want Bridge Commander like combat, just imagine that your monitor is the view screen and that ship you see is just a "representation" of what your ship is doing.

just informing you that trolling is against forum regulations. Prepare for problems if you want all of that.

I think this guy just wanted to talk about his game experience on another game and suggest to the devs that they might do more to make space combat like the other game that he feels is superior. I don't see anything wrong with that.

That's what I meant although I'm happy with the game how it is it's just bridge commander did a much better job of making me feel like a starfleet captain than STO does at the moment. I just hope the devs can take on board the lessons from other games to make this one even better

STO was deliberately designed around tall-ship combat and situational awareness.

STO's combat is centered around an entire ship and her crew, rather than the first-person perspective of the captain.

STO conveys information to the player in ship combat in a way that represents the myriad sets of data that an entire bridge crew would receive in order to make a decision.

Is it as immersive as Bridge Commander? No.
Is it more simulation oriented? I think so. Bridge Commander doesn't really convey as much information due to the forced perspective. In Bridge Commmander, you're operating with more blindspots and deficiencies that wouldn't exist on a ship in the future. STO present the spatial relationships between ships and firing arcs much better than Bridge Commander did.

While I for one do not want combat from the bridge prospective I think it would be cool to have Mission where you have some interaction with your bridge or another part of your interior. But I think the big problem with that from what I heard Gozer say is right now the game has no way of knowing what bridge you have or what size layout you are useing. That fact that everyone is different and chooses different things it would make it extremly hard to make it your ship and that would just hurt the Star trek experince IMO.

The actual combat in Bridge Commander really isn't that compelling.

Its the same as TIE Fighter, or Starfleet/Klingon Academy, or Wing Commander, or any other Space Flight Sim where you turn in a circle trying to line up a shot. (As in, holding an arrow key or joystick in one direction and watching the space blur by. Its Dogfighting. And it really didn't fit with Star Trek ships.

The cool part of BCs "ship engine" was the BO "overlay" where you could basically give auto-pilot commands to have the tedium of turning in circles slightly reduced. It basically hid the "dogfighting" aspects behind a UI. which worked "okay" but when you got up against hard enemies (or in PVP maps) you had to dogfight yourself, forgoing the BO commands)

I too would love for there to be more "BO interaction" instead of them being buttons on a UI... but its just not possible right now.

And the actual space ship combat in STO is BETTER than Bridge Commander, so I can accept that.

And you said it yourself, you CAN go play BC if you need a "fix" of bridge combat.

Bridge Commander is far more Star Trek with Space Battles than STO.

Outside of the iconic starships, STO's Space Combat is nothing like Star Trek and I'm growing more and more disappointed it coming about spam and gimicks.

Actually, space combat are fun but not very good too.
I played 6 years on SWG and JTL with POB / Multiplayers and housing ships.

Actually, u'r the captain of a ship with 600 pll on board, and in the same time, it's YOU, you do the job alone on your BIG ship. Actually, we can delete BO and continue to play with the same skills...
We are Alone on our BIG ship.

I disagree completely. If you were able to watch a space battle in STO as a third party (between players, and not NPC controlled) and then compare it to a BC fight, STO would look MUCH more like a battle from the Trek series than BC would.

BC would look like a dogfight from starwars between fighters, or battlestar galactica, with the huge ships hurtling at full speed doing loops and twists and dogfighting. 99% of a BC fight was trying to get the enemy within a stupidly small firing arc.

Whereas STO, the two ships are on a mostly level plane, worrying about firing arcs and shield facings still, but in a tactical sense and not white-knuckled flight-sim combat.

BC was fun until a fight started. STO gets GOOD when the fight starts

I agree with the OP. The space combat made that game, for me, one of my all time favorites. And My #1 space combat game. I don't think STO will ever be like that... BUT it would be cool to have another game like that. Hopefully Star Trek Oriented.

Actually, space combat in STO conveys a great flavor of Star Trek, especially with BOs affecting play with their abilities. Bridge Commander and he Star Fleet Command series, while they may have their own merits, falls short of the "Trek Experience."

Cryptic should slice off the starship combat game and sell it as a separate game... it'll likely make a few bucks for them.

I think it's a grand overstatement to say that it is "nothing" like Star Trek. If anything, it's proven to be very, very much like Star Trek from ship movement to orientation. It only lacks a few features like full vertical movement as seen in Wrath of Khan.

Personally, the space combat in this game is one of the biggest reasons I come back to it again and again. It's a lot of fun. Hitting the hull full on with torpedos after knocking down the facing, and subsequently watching the hull rating drop like a rock, is immensely satisfying.

I speak from a purely PvE standpoint, but I think at least these points mostly still stand even in PvP.

Still Bridge Commander was much more immersive and felt more Star Trek overall. With it's voice overs. Not to mention the Bridge Interiors and character interaction. Even the way you'd pick up missions as well and issue orders.

If I wasn't stupid enough to invest $500 in this game, I'd be happy to leave.

PvE stopped being Star Trek when we hit Lt Commander due to all those abilties.

And forget about PvP, that is not even a DS9 fight, its a complete disaster. Especially how people zip around like they were at warp, yet even in DS9 manuverability wasn't that stupid.

Please, try a couple of PvP matches. I'm pretty sure your opinion will be quite different.

I've tried PvP matches, had to level a Klingon that way all the way to Captain before I laid off. I even duked it out with my brother and double teamed Feds trying to capture points.

I went back to make sure I read your initial statement proper, and I did. You made no differentiation between PvP and PvE. You made a large generalized statement when you should have made a more pronounced one that addressed your concerns more specifically.

You have to note that Bridge Commander is all Space Combat, there aren't any Away Missions and such so that's why Totally Games could get away with it.

Did you see the intro where Picard and your first officer walked onto the bridge? Yeah.
