Design Lead, Al “CaptainGeko” Rivera. = Genius

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Recently interviewed on Stoked Al Rivera earned his money at Cryptic for this interview, Al answered all the math questions with great certainty. I was so impressed with interview and pre-interview I am giving him the "Genius" Title.

I offer my feedback on a couple things:

1. Consoles for abilities sound great, but we would need more console slots in that case

2. The "Duty Roster" is way off from what we asked for and has strayed from the "Crew System"

3. The Galaxy X was a nice update, but it still needs help with the Galaxy refit turn rate and needs Battle Cloak. (along with the high tier Defiant)

4. dStahl said they BO exchange was still in development, but we have not heard much about it. I authored a thread how it I thought my training and recruiting (BO Exchange) should work.

5. When cuts scenes happen can the code not have an option to use your bridge like the Foundry does with using our BOs or our ship name IE [playerselectedbridge] or [playerselectedTransporterroom] similar to the way different Capatins are showed in cut scenes? This would make the chosen bridge display or other set. When Bridges become customizable the bridge or other set piece name would have a tag for it unique customization and load as part of the cut scene. or Foundry Bridge and or ready room, ETC

6. It is my opinion that Atari should be showering you guys with resources to keep the ball rolling for this land mark wave of interest with weeklies.
Thank you.

(Al you should do more interviews, you interview is now my favorite thus far.)

    My feeedback on your feedback:
    1. I suspect we will have more console slots in T6. Who knows what kind of changes they are looking to make, however. I suppose this could be possible, and I really wouldn't be against it.

    2. Who are you? The design lead for STO? No, you are a guy giving suggestions. They don't have to follow a single thing that any of us put forth. That includes you.

    3. There have been lengthly posts from the Cryptic people themselves on why the battle cloak is NOT being given to the Feds on ANY ships. My personal opinion aside on the cloak mechanics, they have been very firm on this. Furthermore, Feds do NOT need the battle cloak. Seriously...post in the PvP forum and people will give you some ideas on how to do just fine without it, as well as a mountain of flames.

    4. See number 2. What the heck, guy? Suggestions, NOT commands. You are not that important, and neither am I.

    5. I know that a while back it was deemed technically unfeasible to do this. I do not know if this has changed during the development of the Foundry.

    6. Cryptic has spread their resources very thin. They are working on at least one more MMOG (Neverwinter) as well as having diverted key assets to work on the Foundry (which is a large project, make no mistake). If the company would focus a bit more, they could turn out a higher quality product in a shorter amount of time. This business model, however, is beyond yours, mine, and the team working on STO's level of authority. This has to do with upper management in Cryptic itself.

This is a constructive feedback thread in reference to the Stoked interview of Captain Geko, please be constructive or do not say anything at all.
    Thank you.

So, rather than clarifying what you feel might be a misunderstanding, or replying with an adjusted statement, you want to just shut me down.

    Huh, typical.

No please feel free to comment on the subject matter(Captain Geko interview). I am only giving my "feed back" I was the original author of the "Crew System" that they wanted to use, my comment was merely pointing out that what we asked for and agreed upon "the idea" as group has been strayed from. I apologize for any misunderstanding.

    Thank you.

Developing this game is not a matter of democratic process. Even if the devs told you flat-out that they liked your idea, spinning it off into their own direction is 100% appropriate and should be expected. Claiming that they're doing something 'wrong' by not following your guide to the letter is not only inappropriate, but also egotistical and short-sighted. After all, they didn't hire you, or pay you to buy your design documents. You have zero ownership in the idea beyond your monthly subscription investment, which is just as much as any other player.

A better approach would be to ask them WHY they made certain choices that differ from your own, and seek the answers that they've probably already worked out.

As to the original interview -- I totally agree on CaptainGeko's skill and knowledge, and giving him a "genius" title would be accurate. He really knows how this game works, inside and out, and it was an honor and a pleasure to have him on our show. We're already talking about having him back again in a few more episodes.

Would people please stop yapping about fed battle cloaks.
Fed does not need them and feds are pretty darn lucky to even have a cloak AT ALL, let alone two cloak capable ships.

Be satisfied with what you got.

Hey folks. This could be a nice thread, but please don't already start trying to have me shut the thread down. This is a place for discussions, people are allowed not to agree with one another. Telling someone else to go away because they do not agree with you makes me reach for the padlock.
This isn't how we work now, is it?

First let me say I enjoy your show, and thank you for having Captain Geko on as a guest host. Developing this game is a democratic process sometimes as Dstahl has said, the players have been developing this game and vital part to its success (its our game) (in multiple interviews). My comments were that the core of the idea has been "strayed from", I am sorry if it came across any other way. Even though I have no "ownership" of the idea, which I agree, I still have the right to chime in my two cents and how I feel on the matter.

Al Rivera is a genius and I hope to see more of him on more pod casts, he thoroughly impressed my with his overall knowledge and his numbers were great, so many questions were answered for me, and some I had not even thought of yet were answered!

I've condensed the info from the segment on the wiki. If you plug in all constants (such as the 75% cap), the formula becomes really simple: Damage Resistance on StoWiki.org

Great interview, looking forward to more :-)

Nitpick: You don't show the curve for negative resistances. That would be interesting to see as well, especially since Nagorak got some confusing results there. (That was before the interview)

For negative dmg res there has to be a different formula. That or I'm misunderstanding something, because the drm of the formula can never be -150 (division by zero is not possible) and if it is even lower you actually increase your dmg res again because of the square.
