Ship abilities or Boffs?

This thread would be dependent on what happens with boffs and the duty roster system.

However, I was wondering if we couldn't remove the assigned ensign slot offer a second Ltc by adding a skill to the associated Lt and then offer every ship, UFP and KDF a universal Ens slot.

Do you think this would cause balance concerns or do you feel your ship would be more viable?

The advance escort with the MAVM offers 3 tac slots, com lt and ens. I'm sure this was an attept to make that 3rd ens slot more valued then it is on the defiant.

I would offer that the Excelsior go with a tac and Sci Ltc while the star cruiser has Eng and Sci and the Assault Cruiser has eng and tac Ltc. This would improve the Assault to a tactical ship variant while the Excelsior is tac and sci based.

Just a thought open to discussion.

surprisingly, no one seems to care about bridge stations and variety, except us. heres a link to my latest thread about it, its similar to what you proposed but i came up with stations for all ships.

Well, we've been getting scolded not to "/sign" things we merely think are good ideas in posts, unless we have something of substance to add. So maybe people aren't posting because "good idea" would be all they have to say . . . and they're not allowed to say just that.

I'd personally like to see a lot more universal slots; and it seems like turning the ensign slots into universals on a number of ships would not be a huge deal. It might make for more wrinkles in balancing out the inherent abilities on ships, since it opens up the combinations that could be used in builds a lot more.

It could also, to some extent, break down the distinctions a bit in tier 5, since in some cases the arrangement of lower rank slots is the only major difference. I guess you would still have console slots, but the gaps would certainly narrow in possible builds. With more universal slots, you might also find a single ship in each line (or even in each tier) becoming much more of a clear "must have" platform, since the individual liabilities would be easier to overcome. This could actually lead to more of a cookie cutter situation rather than less, as certain configurations become perceived as WIN buttons.

Well that would make sense if people don't have any ideas of thier own to add to or improve upon an idea.

Every ship at max has 5 Ensign skills. Depending on your advanced grade BOffs (Cmdr, LtC) is what sways your desicion on the Ensign alone. Thus if I am in an escort with only cannon weapons what 3 ensgin skills would I choose?

With a Commander I can take a Cannon skill 3, 2x LtC I could take Cannon skill 2 and a Torpedo skill 3. Then with my 2x Lt Skills I take an Attack Pattern 1 and Torpedo High Yeild 2, and then I have 3 tac Ensign skills...Tactical Team would be the ONLY skill useable at this point and I don't think you would take it 3 times would you? even if you did not take the Skills at 2 and took them at 1 you are still left with an extra Ensign Skill and it basically forces you to take a beam weapon so you can use a skill.

Tactical is the biggest kick in the teeth though. Engineering is not far off but at least you can take an Emergancy Power varient so it works.

I have seen many threads about this issue of late and I know many of us feel something needs to change about these slots but I do think they need to be role modeled ships and not all Universals. If the Ensign was Universal for all ships then as a Cruiser you might want that extra Beam ability, as Science you might want that Emergency Power skill and as a Tac either a Sci or Eng skill would do your ship much more to improve its effectiveness or survivability.
