I just realized something disappointing...

My recent fly-by of Earth space dock showed that nearly all the ships there were black and green, black and Tron, or Borgified. By introducing the rare shields with stats that cannot be touched by any other shields, along with the similar modifications made by other items it means we're about to have nothing at all left of the original Federation ship design - its just going to be Borg-ish, Reman-ish, or Tron-ish ships from here on out. Pity.

um, you can disable the look. Also, important to note, you could roleplay that aspect as well. I roleplayed the idea that my engineer captain used the reman shields to put himself on a better footing against the Romulans on romulan missions.

All of these can be turned off. However, players are exercising their freedom in not turning them off.

If you wish to take away the rights of players from customizing their ships (as well as the rights of those who wish to see players like that), go right ahead. ;)

"Can be turned off" is the operative word here. And my intention was to point out that if the Federation is to remain familiar, it will be necessary to have Federation ships that look like Federation ships - and, to that end - to have shields and consoles that enhance the look of Federation ships in a more Federation fashion which do the same and better as the ones that alter them in a non-Federation fashion.

Can't help but notice that all your characters have TOS or MU uniforms.
Unfortunately your freedom to customize comes with the price of everyone else having freedom to customize.

When it comes to customization you cannot have the good without the bad.

Let's just add a special ship customization toggle that changes what other players look like on the client end.

That way I can make my ship look different and other players who want to see different can. :)

Customization and the ability to show off your looks to others, is one of the basic and compelling elements of an MMO, and should stay that way, since it is a part of the main attraction. Subduing special effects if they are unusually bothersome, might be accepted, as long as the effect is not changed fundamentally.

Well if that's the case then I want an option on the Fed side that only shows people in star fleet uniforms (so no off duty uniforms), and on the KDF side only Klingon Players, because no one but a klingon should be in the KDF. And then while we are at it, the only ship design I like is the Galaxy X so I want an option to show every ship flying around as a Galaxy X.

I've been here forever. I started with changing my uniform colors to ones that no one else did - because in the early days EVERYONE had to have the uniforms looking exactly like they did on TV. When I got the TOS and MU uniforms everyone else had already started changing the colors on the standard uniforms to colors similar to mine. Now, though, I use the TOS and MU uniforms because my Engineering captain looks great in something low-cut and sexy. The point being, though, they're all STARFLEET uniforms. Welcome back to the point...

The word "tone" comes to mind when I think of this topic. Seeing ships everywhere with borg junk sticking out of them, or cartoon trails coming from their engines, or doofy shields, all of that screws with the tone of Star Trek Online.

I don't know how easy it would be to accomplish but I would dearly love an option to be able to turn off the theme-breaking visuals on other players's ships. We're not the Collective, we're not the Bling Fleet, we are Star Fleet and we should look like it.

I'm not sure where I'm losing you...

Why don't the DEVs just make an effort to come up with components that make the Federation vessels look Fed-special in a 30-years-later sort of way? I know they're all very creative people...sometimes that creativity just needs to be encouraged to transcend accepted boundaries.

and it would follow that we should remove all TOS ships, uniforms, and devices from the game, right?

My whole point is that you're not going to make the ships more Federation than they already are. They're already as canon as they can be with the visuals disabled on these devices.

if we add a toggle, the tonal purity gurus can just enable it and play the game they want to.

Go ahead and request that. You have every right to do so, whether the Devs choose to do it or not.

I make my ship and characters look how I want everyone else to see me. I want to be different. And you should not have a choice in how I present myself. Turning off these things so you don't see them takes away from my individuality. You are right, we are not the collective, so why should we all look the same and conform to YOUR point of view.

and it would follow that we should remove all TOS ships, uniforms, and devices from the game, right?

My view on it is that they should never have been included in the first place. But, they are here now, and taking things away from players once they have them is very bad juju in an MMO. So no, we don't remove anything.

This speaks to the point the OP is bringing up. In answer to his previous post a few back, it is unfortunately too late to remove the Borg, The Bling, and the Tron from the game. It's here now, and if it is removed people will not be happy. Bad juju, as I said. I support your desire for more federation-esque visual upgrades in upcoming patches but it's too late to make the other stuff go away.

However, the tech does exist to hide certain of the costume pieces in the game. Armor, kits, borg ship parts, etc. All of that can be hidden at present. All I would ask for, were I to ask for anything, is an extension of existing technology. Allow me to hide those same things on other players.

So long as it is a setting or toggle under Options.

I love that most of the ship purists don their favorite era's clothing, yet it's 2409, not 2375 or earlier anymore.

Ultimately, player choice should trump any particular purist: " I want it only to look like TOS/ENT/TNG/VOY/2409" opinion.

I would love that so much. Because one of my few complaints, is that I hate all the ridiculous looked stuff around. And the response "You can turn it off" Is not helpful, because of course I can, it's the other people that bugs me. And before you say "Well that doesn't affect you, what other people do!" the reason is, in what other star trek game would it be ok to see friendly ships with borg parts on them, or glowing like Tron? It makes no sense in star trek, so my complaint is that it is here at all rather than trying to tell people not to use them.

So basically, I am just saying I want a switch so I don't have to look at that.

I agree that these special effects can be seen as distracting, bordering to overkill with this setting in mind. A more subtle approach, more in tune with the environment would be preferable, and less of an eyesore.

Voyager had borg stuff put on the ship during one of its seasons (can't remember what season or episode and I'm too lazy to go and find out). And it always had borg tech help them out.

YOU are a member of STARFLEET. You fly the ships of the line. You are not a privateer racing out into the unknown reaches of the universe to build a mine and raid planets.
