Yeah, I remember during Foundry Alpha, we had the WIP of the NX / Utopia, as well as some of the uniforms, prior to it becoming available on the C-Store.
And it looks like the model is nicely done. Can't wait to see it on Tribble for actual testing.
Then canon died when the game launched with the Miranda (Star Trek II the Wrath of Kahn) as the starter ship.
The Oberth is actually newer then the Miranda, having debuted in Star Trek III The search for Spock.
to be honest they should retract the whole path to 2409 they have epically failed to live up to the time line which they proposed the game was set in by introducing variables which have no proper place in the time line and events which makes no sense now if this set set in the more late Tng Era i'd have no problem with the presence of TMP crafts it's a well known fact that both the miranda and the excelsior took part in both the battle for deep space nine and wolf 359 as well as the battle of sector 001
not saying the Tng vessels have anymore place to quote that Admiral from Star trek III, there 30+ years out of date they've done there part

well thats kind of debatable, judging by register numbers. but i think number sets were class based back then
when i first found out that cryptic was going to keep the miranda around in 2409 i was genuinely ****ed. those HAD to have been retired by then. then i come to find that the fricking constitution class was in game too! that made even less sense! oh but then you can fly the tos connie too! ok i think i understand now how much importance the date the game takes pace in has. none.
you wanna know the worst part though? those ships were in game at launch, but they didn't bother making an excelsior to complement them. W.T.F. how could putting those in game but not the excelsior make sense? you might as well have the galaxy in game, but not the nebula. oh wait
but the gaps got filled, and the ships look great, better than the ships at launch, so its all good now.

Why? According to Mem Alpha both ships entered service around the same time. The Oberth early 2280s and the Miranda mid-2280s. Both ships also saw action in TNG, DS9 and the Miranda was in First Contact as part of that beginning battle.
Ships may be old but their innards can be upgraded to handle newer systems.
Besides canon is a myth. I don't understand why people keep crying about this mythical canon thing. Every single series and the movies keep contradicting this so called canon, and some series even contradicted themselves. Enjoy good entertainment for what it is and don't worry about what happened before, worry what is happening now.

thats all good and fine Sanddog but people want there old style ToS Interior and such for this ships ... thats not upgrading thats like taking a Nimitz Super Carrier and filling it with parts from a Ww2 Carrier in the same respect having the interior of what can best be called a reproduction or some admiral's idea of a sick joke and putting a ToS interior inside a 2409 Miranda
think of the man hours wasted training a crew on said systems its like scotty in the TNG episode he was totally useless on the enterprise D since he had not a clue what what the systems did
Dev's come on the toliet doesn't go on that side of the ship, and why did you put the snack bar over there?
Please take it out as well as all other cannon/model issues and don't put them back in until they are all fixed, some time next year. Thanks

I'm all for it. It is the people screaming "canon" violation that the ships shouldn't even be there in the first place. I don't see why they shouldn't. After all its just a game that has absolutely zero basis in the fictional canon that people cite so much.
Cool lookin ship. Though I have to say the folks who are constantly going on about things "Ruining their immersion" and whatever else need to get over themselves, its not that serious. Besides does your canon ship save you from me or some other klingon immersing a quantum torpedo in your...I'll stop there.;)

that's what i keep trying to tell them (but the trick is actually getting them to listen ), and i'm glad someone agrees
also, yeah it looks good, much like the movie version (and good thing that cowardly captain is gone by now)
Canon was tossed out the window when they decided to let people choose and customize thier uniforms. And as long as there are people coming to the boards and posting that they'll pay money for this and that then rest assured that sooner or later this and that will find it's way into the game. The dollar trumps canon every time.

In all fairness, If I'm a fleet Admiral and I'm going to give a present day Ensign their own ship to command, it might just be something from the Civil War, but more likely from the Revolutionary War.

Trek always had a Hornblower in space vibe. Roddenberry was certainly inspired by that.
So, one has to wonder how they intend to handle the VA Interphase Cloaking Oberth Refit... What? They put in Chang's B'rel.
I imagine an Oberth model would be similarly integrated to the way the Excelsior was, with a free one added somewhere (likely at Lt, as an alternative to the Miranda?), and a refit at VA equipped with an experimental cloak (more likely a combat cloak than an actual Interphasic one, but I could be surprised).
The model looks good. I hope the artists paid as much attention to detail for the explosion it'll be consumed by 7.8 seconds after the fight starts.
Tackiest observation in trek history: Naming the Oberth death-by-exploding-fireball ship in STIII after an astronaut who died in an actual explosion/fire is pretty bad. Just saying - the USS Aldrin woulda worked, too. Writers - I'm looking at you.
What is with all these people flipping out over older ships being in the game. For starters, one dev has already mentioned that older ships/interiors/uniforms are needed in game so players can make missions set in other time periods through the foundry. They have to appease fans from all genres. Not everyone was happy that the game was set in a new-time period and they can't make an MMO for each time period.
Secondly, it makes sense the older vessels that older mothballed ships would be brought out of the reserve and refitted for low ranked ship commanders (you officially command a ship at Lieutenant in STO due to the war). They're not going to place a green behind the ears Lieutenant in a brand new, shiny ship, they're going to bring some 100+ year old mothballed ship out of the reserves and refit it as best as they can and hope for the best.

Star trek has to have ships from Star Trek. Canon was thrown out the window when they put the game after all of the movies and shows.

Chang's B'rel lasted longer than five seconds in combat.
Well one could back up the Miranda class b/c of its constant use during TNG / DS9 era.

God that is one UGLY ship!!

By ugly do you mean, really cool looking? Because otherwise one can only assume you have terrible taste.:D
