Give a "veteran" STO-er reasons to re-join the action

Hi guys,
so yeah the title pretty much says it. i have cancelled my subscription in july of 2010 after a couple of disappointments with the game and the feeling that us players are getting overly "milked" (c-store, 15eur monthly).

Ive been onboard from march to july if i remember correctly, ive had one max level fed and one klink, a couple of hundred million creds, full mk xi equips etc. Then, one day (apprx. 2-3 weels after season 2 had been released) i just didn't see whats left to do in the game, there was a blatant lack of end-game content. no pvp-rewards, loot and items were far too generic, the weekly episodes absolutely didn't justify the monthly fee for me so yeah; basically i just felt the game had nothing more to offer to me. another thing that bugged me greatly was the fact that china farmers took over most farming spots and noone seemed to care.

so now after half a year or so i ask you; is there any legitimate reason for someone like me to give the game another chance?

Qapla!

There has been a bunch of new stuff added that's worth a look, but be warned - you'll get through all of that stuff pretty quickly, leaving only dailies available to get new ships. If you're looking for some real content, you'll complete all of that pretty fast.

thanks for the reply. by new ships you mean either the deviant or the retrofit assault cruiser etc? .. because these have already been introduced with season 2. and im not willing to spend another penny on the c-store to be honest.

Aegis and Borg sets should be more your style. Emphasis on the Borg set. Takes a dedicated anti-STF team to get all peices.

Several minor balance changes also have taken place since Season 2. Introduction of the Devidian, Deferi, and recently the conclusion of the Romulan series as well.

Foundry should be up next in a month or so...

All the formerly C-Store-only ships are obtainable on a per-character basis by the use of Vice Adm. level daily awards (Emblems) now. Only the Gal-X remains a C-store only ship, mainly due to licensing reasons.

You also missed out on the limited awards of the Devidian and Deferi series, which was a triolic staff of some sort and a Breen BOff. If you're interested, the Romulan limited award is still up and its a Romulan BOff.

so 2 (two) sets of items have been introduced? sounds a bit meager. how about the crafting?

Honestly its hard to list everything new that has been added since Season 2.

I suggest looking at the engineering repots and all the Release Notes

Also take a look at the C-Store. The majority of ships (if not all of them) that you see listed can also be purchased in the game. It'll take a lot of work to gather up enough money to buy them, but it can be done.

In any case, to answer your question as quickly as possible, there are 15 new episodes which are all amazingly done and tell a great store, a bunch of new ships with different features, a diplomatic corps (which is a bit of a grind, but worth it), revamped sector space, crafting has been updated and is more useful, and so much more.

There is also tons of great new features coming such as Foundry (a user-generated mission system), revamped ground combat, a Duty Officer system (which allows you to control the crew of your ship) and other things.

Go read the patch notes since you left and make the decision for yourself. No one needs to sell you on anything, either you'll like what changes and additions you read about or you won't. What I like may not be what you like.

Endgame is sparse, even if there's a clearer item and ship progression now thanks to endgame shop consolidations and crafting revisions.

There are items to grind for now (many more than there were at launch).

However, endgame is lacking outside of these small grinds for gear that may or may not be better until the cap & gear raising.

From a content perspective, the new Featured Series offer different items: they offer things that fundamentally change how you play, instead of always being numerical improvements. That's partial incentive to do feature episodes.

However, there's no point in earning those rewards when the content isn't radically different: you simply use them in the same old PvP maps or in new Featureds for new loot for new recursive loops.

Hopefully, content changes as the game moves forward.

    that was superfluous, thanks anyway.

    @Darren_Kitlor

thanks man, that was pretty much the answer i was waiting for. seems im gonna wait another couple of months. judging from what ive gathered in the forums the game might be free 2 play by then.. wow that must feel like a kick in the balls for all those lifetime subs.

on a sidenote; is it illegal to sell one's account on ebay?

Actually free 2 play just means anyone can play the game for free, but will have limited access to certain things (like number of character slots). Anyone who subscribes will have unlimited access and get free atari tokens (previously known as cryptic points) each month. So actually its a pretty good deal for us lifers.

Illegal as in, you'll go to jail? No. Against the game's rules, possibly. I'm not 100% sure on that.

EDIT: It is against the terms of use. http://www.startrekonline.com/terms_of_service Read section 10

Quite the contrary, lifetime subscribers in Cryptic's other game get 400 c-store points per month (or Atari Tokens as they're rebranded).

The lifetime subscription means I won't need to subscribe to unlock content and I'll get a free stipend of points each month to buy those c-store goodies I refuse to buy now on principle (i.e. $25 ships are something I refuse).

There is more progression and the new Featured Episodes are more like single-player RPG missions than like MMO ones (we're talking voice acting in some, cutscenes, accolades, new party members, etc.) However, nothing at endgame is fundamentally different: just much wider than deeper.

    Legally? Not necessarily.
Is it against the ToS and could get the account closed? Yes.
Will purchasers of closed accounts be contesting charges through your payment provider? Probably.

    Don't do it. ;)

You'd probably be wrong. I've heard that Cryptic makes up 49% of Atari sales (and that STO makes up a significant portion of that, I doubt it'll go F2P for a while.)

    2. Updates to the Assimilated Cruiser PVP Map

    23. Foundry: Mission Creation Tools
    24. Devidian Featured Series Episodes (5 Episodes) and Rewards - including updated Devidian Enemy Group
    25. Klingon Ships: B'Rel Raider, Orion Cruiser, Gorn Science Vessel, Vor'cha Assault Cruiser, Nausicaan Siege Raider

    37. New Game Font
    38. Crafting Stations added to Qo'nos
    39. Klingon access to the Pi Canis Sector
    40. New Klingon Patrol missions in Pi Canis Sector
    41. 200 Day Veteran Reward for Klingon Characters
    42. Additional Season 3 bug fixes and updates
    43. Feature Episode Series 3
    44. New Melee Weapons: Lirpas and Swords
    45. Feature Episode Series 3: Cloaked Intetions
    46. New playable shuttles and fighter craft
    47. 400 Day Veteran Rewards (including Valiant title, Fed Captain's Yacht or Klg DujHod class Aux craft, and a 5% skillpoint boost up to LT Commander 6.)
    48. Better ways to promote and inform players about Feature Episodes in game
    49. New Earth Spacedock (Interior and Exterior)

That's all the non-fix related stuff (and a couple I thought were really important). I think that's alot of stuff :)

Oh, and not only are there a ton more fixes and updates, but Foundry is probably goin to hit live soon and then thousands of missions at your fingertips :D

You do know that "Free to Play" is anything but.....right? Lifetime subs would still be valuable if the game went "free to play"
